Watched this gem again. The Wrestler is Darren Aronofsky’s most understated film, but also perhaps his most heartfelt. I remember being so gutted that Mickey Rourke didn’t win the Best Actor Oscar for his incredible work as Randy the Ram: a man out of time, only ever truly at peace in the squared circle, surrounded by lights and screaming fans. Marisa Tomei also kills it in the small amount of screen time she has. A brilliant, earnest character piece. It also has one of my favorite ending shots of all time. #film #movie #movies #aronofsky

Saw Wild Rose last night and really enjoyed it. Rose-Lynn Harlan leaves prison determined to dive back into her pursuit of becoming a country music star. The problem: she’s a native Glaswegian with two kids and an inability to follow through on anything. Her mother yearns for her to be there for her children, perhaps at the expense of her dreams. Their fraught relationship makes up the bulk of the story, delivering an effective drama about love, compromise, and growing up. Jessie Buckley gives an incredible performance as Rose; she’s also an excellent singer. See this if you can. #film #movie #movies #wildrose

Watched Thief last night. It’s incredible that it was Michael Mann’s first film. His artistic voice is already so clear. James Caan gives the type of performance that would make anyone want to act. A great film. #film #movie #movies #michaelmann

I saw The Last Black Man in San Francisco recently and can’t stop thinking about it. It’s about a young black man seeking to reclaim his childhood home that was built by his grandfather. Beautifully shot, directed, scored, and grounded by a pair of excellent performances, this movie excels as an exercise in craft. However, beyond that, it’s a surreal, thought-provoking story about the cultural erasure propagated by gentrification, identity, what ownership and its loss means in America, and how the past is mythologized to both one’s benefit and detriment. A stirring debut by director Joe Talbot. #film #movie #movies #thelastblackmaninsanfrancisco

Please see Booksmart. It’s a funny, intelligent, heartfelt film about friendship, growing up, and getting out of your comfort zone. The performances are great (props to a standout Billie Lourd ), the cinematography is excellent, and the soundtrack is a 10/10. Support female and POC filmmakers! Excited to see what Olivia Wilde makes next! #film #movies #comedy #booksmart

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menace. Thinking back on it now is a strange experience. As an 8-year-old, it transported me to another galaxy, moved and inspired me in the same way the original trilogy had. It was also released at the dawn of internet fandom and, in retrospect, seems like a microcosm of everything we are experiencing now in our blockbuster nerd culture: a strange, often inspiring, often hateful mixture of hype, hyperbole, and community. No matter one’s feelings about the film, its importance in media history cannot be ignored. It’s also fitting, perhaps, that Game of Thrones’ finale should be taking place today. Here’s hoping it makes me feel the same way Phantom did, all those years ago. #movie #film #starwars #phantommenace #got #gameofthrones

I love endings and I can’t wait for Game of Thrones’ finale tomorrow. Similar to Lost, though an ensemble, I’ve always felt that the show was really about one character, in this case Jon Snow, the only person in the whole series in which ice and fire meet. He’s a just and honorable person who doesn’t want power. That’s why he’s always been my choice to sit on the Iron Throne. Below are my predictions for tomorrow’s episode (possible spoilers? ): - Daenerys says “Burn them all” when asked what to do with the Lannister prisoners. - Sansa and Bran arrive with Stark bannermen from the North. - Daenerys tries to have Jon toasted by Drogon, but he remains unburnt, confirming his lineage to everyone. - Bran wargs into Drogon, stopping him from attacking Jon and the Northerners. - Arya kills Grey Worm. Jon (tearfully ) kills Daenerys. - Jon takes the Black, yielding the Iron Throne to Tyrion with Davos as his Hand. - Arya travels west. #got #gameofthrones #tv #jonsnow #fantasy

Another week, another divisive episode of #GameofThrones However, I enjoyed it for the most part and can’t stop thinking about the series as a whole. Which is why “The Bells” MVP for me has to be Sandor Clegane aka The Hound, who proved himself to be much more than his nickname with a rare moment of self-reflection and thoughtfulness. #tv #GOT

#DetectivePikachu is a joyous experience, bursting with Pokémon love for fans old and new. It delivers a fun noir mystery along with deft world building and truly impressive special effects. Most importantly, it makes you want to spend more time in this wondrous, charming, and strange world. Can’t wait to see where they take the next film; fingers crossed for Team Rocket and the Kanto region. #pokemon #film #movies

MVP of “The Last of the Starks”: Varys, and literally only Varys. Maybe the most moral person left on the show, besides Jon, but he’s much smarter than Jon (who admittedly is in a very difficult position ). #GameofThrones #GOT

Happy #StarWarsDay ! I could never adequately express how much joy and wonder Star Wars has brought into my life. So instead I’ll say that I still have an awesome, gritty, scoundrel-filled Boba Fett pitch and would love to make his movie. #StarWars #BobaFett

Bidding a heartfelt farewell to Peter Mayhew, a performer of incredible talent and subtlety. He crafted an iconic character without the benefit of speech, and made me wish that one day I too could have a friend as loyal and loving as Chewbacca. Happy 20th Anniversary to Spongebob Squarepants! Easily one of my favorite shows of all time, I can’t adequately express how much of an impact Spongebob has had on my sense of humor. It’s deeply weird, yet empathetic, filled with amazing characters and some of the cleverest, most memorable writing in cartoon history. Some Favorite Episodes (in no particular order ): Sailor Mouth, Pizza Delivery, Rock Bottom, SB-129, Bubble Buddy, Frankendoodle, Krusty Krab Training Video, Chocolate with Nuts #tv #animation #cartoon #spongebob #nickelodeon

There were times where I thought that maybe Warriors of Virtue was some mess of half-remembered scenes from multiple things. But no, I was right about the existence of a martial arts fantasy movie with fighting kangaroos. It’s a wonderfully bizarre film with truly impressive costuming and animatronics. Seek it out. #film #movies #kangaroo

Reminder: The Last Jedi is a great film. I can’t wait for Episode IX. I love Star Wars because it cuts through the rampant cynicism and ugliness of our present. Each film in the Skywalker Saga is about people trying to do the right thing in the face of seemingly insurmountable evil. It’s not about succeeding, but striving. That’s the human story. I’ll always be excited by it. My love remains undiminished. If anything, it’s stronger than ever. #StarWars #EpisodeIX #TheRiseofSkywalker #The Last Jedi

Six years ago, My Chemical Romance broke up. Few artists have had such a monumental impact on my life and their influence is clearly traceable throughout every single thing I’ve ever created. I’m forever grateful for discovering their music; it always made me feel less alone and more hopeful for the future. I’m still sad they’re gone, but we’ll carry on. #mychemicalromance #mcr #music

More reading, more Schwab! The long-awaited sequel to 2013’s Vicious, Vengeful returns to a world of villains and murderers. Victor Vale, struggling with the debilitating consequences of what happened during the first book’s climax, contends with being hunted by EON, an organization determined to capture and exploit extraordinary people. On top of that, his former friend and now nemesis, Eli, is helping EON in their quest, and a new, powerful villain named Marcella has appeared in the city of Merit, laying waste to everyone in her path. Vengeful is a strange beast. The language, as expected, is vibrant and characterful, and the nonlinear storytelling is compelling, though disparate (purposefully so, I think ). Overall, I enjoyed the book, though I found the characters, for the most part, reprehensible. True to its series moniker, there are no heroes here, only villains. #books #bookstagram #reading #superheroes #veschwab

The Near Witch, the first book by V.E. Schwab, is about being different. The town of Near, existing in a pseudo 1700s America(? ), is a place of superstition and boredom for Lexi, the adventurous daughter of a deceased hunter. She’s frowned upon for her desire to venture out into the moors that surround Near, to be a tracker instead of a housewife. Her relatively boring life is thrown into upheaval with the arrival of Cole, a mysterious young man that begins to haunt the edges of the village. When children start disappearing, Cole is immediately suspected, but Lexi fears it is the work of an older, darker power: the fabled Near Witch. Straightforward and brief, The Near Witch is nonetheless a tale well told, filled with lush language and clever world-building; it’s easy to see the roots of V.E. Schwab’s superstardom being laid and I’m happy to see this story reprinted in hardcover for the first time. #book #bookstagram #reading #fantasy #veschwab
