Sea cucumber / Pepino de mar - 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘬𝘢𝘭𝘪 Delle Chiaje, 1823 - - - - - P. Echinodermata > SubP. Echinzoa> C. Holothuroidea > O. Aspidochirotida > F. Holothuriidae > 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘬𝘢𝘭𝘪 - - - - - Sea cucumbers are strange looking animals that belong to the same group as sea urchins or starfish, the echinoderms. Sea cucumbers have elongated and turgid bodies that can become softer and thinner when they need to go through narrow spaces or when they are hold out of water, thanks to their mutable collagenous tissue. They have a unique set of defenses. When threatened, they can eject clusters of fine tubes (named cuvierian tubules ) through the anus that become adhesive when in contact with sea water, as well as releasing toxins. If that is no enough, they can eviscerate part of their digestive organs so that the predator is distracted. Those organs will regenerate in few weeks. The species 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘬𝘢𝘭𝘪 is black or dark brown in color, lives in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, and can grow up to 25-30cm. - - - - - #holothuria #holothuriaforskali #seacucumber #pepinodemar #sealife #sea #animal #animalphotography #wildlifephotography #wildlife #nature #naturephotography #zoodiversity #zoology

Sloths have freakishly low metabolisms, and we think that this could be one of the reasons why they can sometimes recover from injuries that would kill most other animals🤕 This sloth managed to survive a nasty domestic dog attack, followed by a double limb amputation!😯 🌿 A professor from the University of Manchester who specialises in gene expression and limb regeneration in gecko lizards has helped to shed some light on what might be behind this strange phenomenon. When geckos need to regrow their tails, they enter what’s known as an ‘embryonic state’, lowering their metabolic rates in order to increase the amount of energy that can go into healing. It’s possible that a sloth’s low metabolic rate works in a similar way, but scientists have yet to gather the evidence needed to back up this intriguing theory!🦎 • • • • • #tuesday #tuesdaymotivation #fact #didyouknow #researh #zoology #biology #animalrescue #slothnation #slothlife #slothy #followforfollowback #likeforlikes #slothappreciationsociety #lovesloths #sloths #sloth #faultier #lenistwo #bradipo #perezoso #slothsofinstagram #lifeintheslothlane #ナマケモノ

New addition to my garden: a hedgehog house! What a magnificent birthday present from my family, I am so excited to see if any hogs decide to move in! Hedgehogs will naturally make nests out of leaves and garden debris, and giving them a box gives them an extra bit of shelter. There are many ways to encourage hedgehogs to live in your garden including... 🦔 putting out food and water: it is a complete myth to give hogs milk, they are actually lactose intolerant! Instead, give them a plentiful supply of meaty dog/cat food and water all year round (they will come out of hibernation over winter to top up on food reserves ). 🦔 make a hedgehog passageway in your fence: hogs will travel between 1-2km a night and regularly get stuck between fences, making a CD sized hole for them to get through really helps them out. 🦔 make your garden insect friendly: let your garden grow wild and put in insect houses to encourage creepy crawlies that the hogs can eat, making your garden even more enticing. 🦔 All these things are great to help out our little spikey friends- and they need all the help they can get at the moment, with their populations declining at a rapid rate. Hopefully this helps out the hedgehogs near me🦔💛. . . . . . . #hedgehog #hedgehoghouse #conservation #britishwildlife #ukwildlife #zoology #earthday #exploreourearth #rspb #wildlifetrust #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #nature #springwatch

#nature #naturephotography #wildlife #naturaleza #wildlifephotography #animals #birds #aves #pajareo #birdlove #birdobsessed #birding #birdwatching #biology #biologia #biologyispassion #zoology #zoologia #shadows #tree #paisaje #summer #landscape_love #birdingmadrid #madrid #mountain #atardecer #sunset #spain #nikoncoolpixp900

Enraptured with this book right now. It's like long form journalism about life as different animals. Ici, elle a pu aussi apprendre le son complexe "ai" ainsi que l'emploi du "s" à la fin des mots pour le pluriel. That patch of land is also used as a runway by a small plane owner. In one particular night, right after the guy landed his plane a male Common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus ) came very upset to the place. I was following him through the viewfinder while taking pictures and when he reached the place I have noticed what all the fuss was about: the guy with the plane disturbed his girls, 3 female pheasants. It was the first time when I photograph female pheasants and probably a rare chance to have both females and a male in the same frame. More info about the photo on the blog. European Adder (Vipera berus ) - young male (subadult ) of common viper enjoying first sunlight of the day after couple days of rain. In this time of season you can find most of vipers close to their dens where they hibernate during the winter. In the end of spring males usually move to their "hunting spost" and now they are comming back so it is good time to see those individuals I observated in the spring. SEA LION BOAT TRIP! ⛵ For reasons unknown these creatures returned to the ocean about 20 million years ago, where they have since become the most successful and widely distributed family of carnivores in the world. The sea lions entire body is structured for life in the water, with a smooth, torpedo shaped torso and flattened, powerful flippers, like four large swim fins instead of feet. In fact, the swim-fins scuba divers and backyard snorkelers use were modeled after a sea lions unique, compressed and web-toed hind feet. #sealion #sealionlover #marinelover #marinecreatures #marineconservation #marinebiology #marinebiologist #marineconservationist #lovemarine #lovemarinecreatures #zoopicture #zoologystudent #zoology #zoologist #zoopicture #seasoulandchill #conservationist #conservation #animallover #animalphotography #animal #animalphotographer

The Dead Zoo 🇮🇪 // The museum was built between 1856 and 1857, housing the Royal Dublin Society's (RDS ) growing collections, which had expanded during the late 18th century. Prior to the construction of the current museum, a large portion of the specimens were made up of Nathaniel Gottfried Leske’s collection, purchased in 1792 and displayed in Leinster House. In 1832 popularity surrounding the collection began to grow, as the zoological and geological specimens were made available for public viewings two days a week. By 1836, a special Parliamentary Committee found that the public should have greater access to the museum. By 1850 visitor numbers reached 44000, leading to the realisation that a larger museum would need to be built to accommodate this influx. In 1853 the RDS began plans for the new museum. A grant of £5000 was granted, with the addition of £2500 raised by public subscription. Architect Frederick Clarendon was commissioned to construct the building (in 1856 ) that still houses the Natural History Museum today. The new museum was adjoined to Leinster House, the previous site of the old museum, allowing for a considerable extension to the premises for the specimens to be exhibited. In 1922 the passage to Leinster House was closed resulting in a reduction of the size of the museum. During the same year the museum was closed to the public due to the changeover of staff from the British civil service to the newly formed Irish service. The museum reopened in 1924, with a significantly reduced staff. By 1927 it was noted that the zoological collections were held in cramped and poor conditions; overall the Natural History Museum was in a precarious condition. During the 1950s the museum only had one member of staff, with others either retiring or resigning their positions. A staircase collapse in 2007 launched a health and safety reform with areas of the museum closed. Recent plans have suggested further extensions and improvements to the museum. As of yet none have come into fruition; the museum's collection and building remained mostly unchanged since Victorian era //
