#Repost @coralgardeners • • • • • ⚠️WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGES⚠️ Roughly half of the world’s reefs have recently died and 90% are expected to die by 2050, and on top of that we are killing marine life at a faster pace than at any other time in the history of the world...something must change or else our oceans and all marine life will go extinct in our lifetimes or our children’s lifetimes. And that’s when the real consequences will set in as reefs are essential for marine life and marine life is responsible for the majority of the oxygen we need to breathe in order to survive...that’s right, if the oceans die, then we as a species die so that’s why we at @karmagawa created the @savethereef movement and need your help in reaching more people because there’s literally no time to waste in spreading massive awareness about this problem as too few people know about it and mistakenly believe reefs and marine life aren’t very important! @amirzakeri and @justinkalaniburbage came to Moorea few weeks ago to film for @savethereef documentary highlighting @coralgardeners actions. #savethereef #wethereef #coralgardeners

When I started spearfishing I went after all sorts of fish. I learned which fish to eat, the others were thrown away. I was a kid having fun with a gun. In time, the ocean taught me to stay calm, spearfishing became a meditation, a break from the outside world. For me, hunting for food is a state of mind. It started like a game but became a deep moment of reconnecting with nature. I learned that the more I was calm, the deeper I could dive, the bigger fish I would bring back to eat. Then, one fish would be enough. Photo : @toutiess #spearfishingworld #wethereef #frenchpolynesia

Beautiful black sandy beach in pemuteran : authentic and far from the crowd 🙏 it was a pleasure to see how people change this place. After only an hour, staying on the beach, I’ve seen some foreign young people in their early 20s hanging around in the beach and cleaning any moop (matter out of place ) that they could find; divers coming back by boat with some big bags filled with plastic waste found ont he ocean; then I went snorkelling and saw some rebuilt girls gardens on infrastructures at the bottom of the ocean 🌊 ♥️ So let’s not be too negative about the future and let’s observe and get inspired by people acting to preserve nature, who give their time to give hope. It’s not a bad thing to pick up moop from the beach actually, better than lying down and getting burnt on my behalf 🥵 #peaceful #tropicalvibes #nature #blackbeach #beach #beaches #pemuteran #bali #indonesia #travel #traveling #travelgram #authentic #authenticbali #calm #balibarat #indonesia #hope #coral #ecology #wethereef #coralreef #ocean #moop

Finding the right conditions to make a split shot, like this one takes time, luck, and patience. It must be a calm day so that it is possible to approach the delicate coral formations without getting tossed around by the waves; there has to be an interesting sky to color the upper part of the image, and most importantly, you have to find a piece of healthy coral reef, which is becoming increasingly difficult. I love making images like this one that celebrate the beauty of our oceans and remind us of how special coral reefs are. If you love this image, I also want you to have it for free so that you can use it as wallpaper on your digital devices. May it remind you that there is hope and that saving our planet’s coral reefs is worth fighting for. Go to the link on my bio to download this image. #wethereef @coralgardeners

WORLD OCEAN DAY [EN] Ocean is a resources of food, of life, energy. It is source of inspiration, dreams, relaxation, admiration, happiness. It is covering around 70 % of the earth. It plays an important role in the regulation of the climax. It can be cold or hot, home of thousands of species, small as plankton to huge mammal as blue whale. Its own under water forest formed by coral. Today this treasure is threatened by overfishing, dangerous chemicals, coastal development, plastic pollution and climate change. So today I want to show you one beauty of the ocean, the Manta ray, observed in Indonesia near the coast of Nusa Penida island. Happy World Oceans Day 💙🌊🦈 . Everything I dream of is in the ocean. Everybody needs to understand that without our oceans, we wouldn't be able to breathe and to live (the ocean produces 50% to 85% of the oxygen we breathe ). We need to stop using our ocean's resources without thinking. We need to cut down on plastic waste, to stop overfishing, to protect our marine species from habitat destruction and other issues they shouldn't be facing, to stop using pesticides and nutrients that kill our sea creatures,... I can't imagine my life without the ocean and you shouldn't be able to neither. #protectwhatyoulove #wetheocean #wethereef #ocean #worldoceanday #savetheocean For the story : those two manta rays where on a cleaning station 10 meters deep in the lagoon of Maupiti Island. They go there to get their skin, gills and teeth cleaned by little fish. As they stay quite calm, it's the ideal moment to watch them as long as you don't disturb them.

| O C E A N W E E K | This #WorldOceansDay , I hope that each of you can set one intention that you can focus on for the rest of this year. By narrowing your resolution on one action, you will be more likely to stick to it and then slowly apply more conservation based lifestyle choices over a period of time rather than attempting a bunch of things at once. Below I’ve listed some intentions to help get you all started. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌊 Give up seafood ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌊 Become a vegetarian ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌊 Only buy locally sourced products (as much as possible ) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌊 Give up single use plastics - water bottles, straws, cutlery, cups ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌊 Drive less, bike/board/walk more ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌊 Give up fast fashion brands and choose to thrift, repair, or only buy from sustainable brands ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌊 Do a weekly trash clean up around your neighborhood or a nearby public area (beach, park, etc. ) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌊 Educate others or learn about which politicians prioritize protecting the environment and VOTE, CAMPAIGN, and PROMOTE them to everyone you know! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌊 Be an ally and empower minorities - this may not seem like it would help the ocean, but uplifting human rights is a way to help environmental rights (blog post to come ) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌊 Spend more time outside and heal yourself (!! ) in nature. If you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t take care of others or our planet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ >> Do you have a goal to help protect the oceans this year? Please share below 💙👇🏽 <<

| O C E A N W E E K | Happy #WorldOceansDay !! I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing some of the amazing creatures I got to interact with on a regular basis during my time in Raja Ampat. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My whole life I’ve only spent a week or two every year by the ocean if I was lucky. Being from a landlocked state and far from the ocean made it difficult to get to. I’m not sure why I’ve always felt this deep connection to the sea, but it led me to learn as much as I could about it growing up. I played computer games about sharks, bought books all about sharks and other marine megafauna, and had my parents record everything on Nat Geo or Animal Planet that discussed life underwater. When I finally got to spend this past year in and under the water almost every day, life finally felt like it was aligning. The ocean has saved my life again and again. Being in the salty water and around all the alien creatures gives me a sense of purpose that feels like home. It brings me peace and has helped me accept and value myself. Being underwater has broadened my perspective on the way this planet has given us so much we ever could have asked for, and yet we’re all still taking more than we could ever need. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . The more I learn about the oceans, the more I realize there is so much still to explore and understand. I truly believe if everyone could spend some time underwater, they’d realize the magnitude of their actions and choices. We are trashing our planet. We missed the first two mass extinctions that humans created thousands of years ago, but we are now witnessing the devastation occurring in what we assume are never ending seas. These fish and foundational systems we take for granted have a limit... and we are rapidly approaching it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 35 mm film 📸 @analogue_oceans

Today is honoring the framework of the entire underwater ecosystem: coral reefs! These beautiful rocks are actually made up of thousands of individual animals, with each individual called a coral polyp. These polyps together build a coral colony, which are the large and magnificent structures that make up coral reefs around the globe. Although they consist of only 10% of the ocean, they give hold over 25% of all marine species found. Some scientists also think they are more biodiversity than any terrestrial jungle. Over 75% of the worlds coral species can be found in Raja Ampat. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I will say going to Raja Ampat was a selfish desire to see what a healthy and productive coral reef ecosystem is supposed to look like. Many reefs around the world are feeling the human impacts of warming oceans, acidification, high nutrients, overfishing, dredging, trawling... the list goes on. Due to its remote location and high protection, Raja Ampat is one of the few areas left on Earth that can sustain high numbers of fish and coral. I remember the first dive just off our own jetty on the island; I was in shock with how beautiful and bountiful the coral was there. Every fish I had learned about could actually be found, and I gained a new appreciation for the variety and purpose of different corals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Going to Raja gave me hope that not all reefs are lost, and there is still much left to fight for. Unfortunately we are going through a crisis in our global political systems it seems, and due to unchecked free markets we have completed trashed and depleted our finite resources. That includes every part of the natural world that makes our planet inhabitable and beautiful, but sustains our civilization. Without the resources we do heavily rely on, the human species will inevitable die out. It’s a harsh truth, but it is the truth. Our oceans are the main source of so many foundational life processes, as well as where 90% of people get there food. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ [cont. in comments]

| O C E A N W E E K | I can’t talk about the amazing marine creatures we saw in Raja Ampat without bringing up the main creature I wanted to see while I was there: the manta ray — Mobula alfredi. Luckily I was blessed with more mantas than I can count. This is a reef manta ray which gets between 3-4 meters (10-14 feet ) across, but we also saw a few oceanic manta rays which get up to 6-8 meters long (18-26 feet ). Manta rays are listed on the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable to Extinction due to targeted fishing as well as bycatch. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As the populations of their shark cousins continually decrease, Asian markets have started demanding manta ray for their gills that are incorrectly said to have medicinal benefit. If you have ever seen @racingextinction , you can witness the horrible hunt of these docile and angelic creatures. Although I do not blame the small villager hunters who do what they need to for money and survival, I do not understand why Chinese people continue to believe the myths that eating pieces of important creatures to the ecosystem will somehow benefit them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mantas are also one of the species that are effected by the huge amounts of plastic pollution we are dumping into our oceans every year ( @carnival cruises, how many tons of waste have you dumped into our seas this year? ). As filter feeders these giants join whale sharks in feeding on some of the tiniest creatures in the sea: krill. Many people dream to watch them do backflips that show feeding, but some have watched them vomit up pieces of plastic that are continuously floating in even the most remote parts of the ocean. I was pretty disappointed to watch the tides and currents routinely bring in various types of plastic that are continually degrading into microplastics which cannot be discerned by hungry manta rays. As other fish also feed on these plastics, we will eventually ingest them as well. I wouldn’t assume the fish on your plate is plastic free. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ [continued below]

| O C E A N W E E K | Today’s marine creature is the Broadclub Cuttlefish — Sepia latimanus. These beautiful cephalopods were pretty common around the reefs in Raja Ampat, and on this occasion I was basically on top of it before I realized he was there! Cuttlefish are one of my favorite animals to see while scuba diving due to their mesmerizing camouflaging abilities. Not only can they put prey into a trance via color changes, but using three layers of skin cells they are able to mimic the array of colors texture surrounding them — despite being colorblind! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One of the coolest things about them though are the W shaped pupils that give them impressive vision. Did you know that they have the ability to actually see behind themselves? This W shape allows them to see well in low light as well as detecting polarized light, providing contrast perception cues. While humans reshape our lenses in order to focus on specific objects, the cuttlefish moves its lenses by reshaping its entire eye (PBS ). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ >>What’s your favorite cephalopod? | O C E A N W E E K | In Raja Ampat if we weren’t looking for manta rays or sharks, most of the time our heads were in the coral looking around for these little guys: nudibranchs! Nudibranchs are a type of sea slug that can be found along the oceans substrate. Coming in many magnificent colors, some species have a special “superpower” that allows them to steal their preys defense mechanisms. For example, a nudibranch that feeds on anemones can use the stinging cells they’ve ingested on a potential predator. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This species is called *Thecacera Picta*, also known as Pikachu’s brother. Although we did not see the actual Pikachu nudibranch [Thecacera Pacifica], which is named after the Pokémon character due to its similar resemblance, we saw a fair amount of its “brother” seen above. Despite their typically small size between 4-10 cm (although some can get much bigger ), many scuba divers have a passion for trying to find as many of the more than 3,000 different species of nudibranch as they can! Whenever we dove with @faldypungus it was always a nudibranch hunt. He found nudibranchs much more interesting than the sharks or turtles 😝 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How many divers out there prefer macro? It’s actually becoming much more popular among scuba divers, with dive sites like Malatapay and Dauin, Negros Oriental in the Philippines getting more tourism just for the macro life! Macro life looks more at species like nudibranchs, frogfish, pipefish, and seahorses. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Don’t forget to check back in every day this week for highlights on marine critters and ending with #worldoceansday this Saturday! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Be sure to follow, like and share for content on marine conservation + conscious living 🌊

| O C E A N W E E K | I was lucky enough to hang out with this lovely green sea turtle *Chelonia mydas* for a bit after taking photos, and look into those beautiful prehistoric eyes. I thought about all the things this animal had overcome. When born, turtles have 1 in 1000 survival rate to get to sexual maturity. They have to cross from their nest to the ocean, avoiding many predators for years to grow to a size that few can hunt. And nowadays, it must avoid human interference. This means not getting hit by boats, not ingesting plastics, avoiding nets and discarded debris, surviving the influx of chemicals into their ecosystems, and unfortunately avoid hunting or poaching by humans. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Whenever I pick up something plastic, or chemically made, I’ll think of these eyes. The soul of a creature that knows a life so different from mine but chose to accept a moment with me. Will I choose convenience over life? Will I choose to hurt something that’s known this planet so much longer than me? How much do I truly love the sea? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This Saturday is #WorldOcean ’sDay, and I want to share with you guys some of my favorite moments and creatures encountered from Raja Ampat. Check back in every day to see the cool and beautiful animals I was lucky enough to see 🌊

Photo by @CristinaMittermeier | In French Polynesia, there is more ocean than land and the sky stretches like a painting in every direction. French Polynesia is a part of the Polynesian Triangle; a region of the Pacific Ocean where a collection of islands from Hawaii to Easter Island were formed in the wake of volcanic activity and coral growth. Around 75% of the world's coral reefs are in distress; threatened by warming water temperatures and climate change. The reefs around French Polynesia have not gone unaffected, but there are people working every day to lessen and alter the impact of local and global pressures on these island reefs. #FollowMe at @CristinaMittermeier and explore my feed to learn about @coralgardeners , an incredible youth-lead organization that is bringing new life to coral reefs in Moorea. #coralreef #ocean #climatechange #WeTheReef let's go, Bismillah #jalanjalan #halaltravel #leadership #halalBangkok

So happy to be leaving Indonesia as a PADI Divemaster 🧜🏼‍♀️ shout out to the best DM buddy @anesaag because I don’t know what I would’ve done without your amazing presence in my life these past two months. . I’ve completely fallen in love with scuba diving this past year, completing almost 300 dives within 10 months. Being in the water has become my personal form of meditation. There’s nothing but the sound of your own breath and the animals of the sea to listen to. No distractions, just the alien world that surrounds you. . . I don’t think I can ever go back to a life without being near the ocean. I’m so excited to bring you guys more information and content to help you fall in love with the ocean too, and how to live a life aligned with the Earth. . . . >> Where do you feel most at home? WE THE REEF. As seen on the picture, team member and content creator @temoanapoole is floating above a bleached reef in front of his house on the island of Mo'orea, Tahiti. We are currently facing a coral bleaching event. We put a lot of effort cleaning our coral nurseries and taking care of our corals. Our future depends on today's action. Dear Raja Ampat, I cried a lot the first week I came here. You were unfamiliar, I was uncomfortable and couldn’t shake the feeling of isolation. But now as we drive off the island for the last time, I feel the saltwater welling up in my eyes. I’m going to miss waking up to the ocean crashing underneath my feet, watching the sky turn to a fiery red as the sun rises with the songs of the birds. I am going to miss being able to look down 20 meters from the boat, and the saltwater taste around my lips as I lay my sandy body on the jetty with the sun warming my skin. . . Being here has taught me how to finally enjoy the silence of my mind. To let go of all the externalities that run my life in the western world. The routine is simple here, and that’s what makes it so wonderful. To be constantly surrounded by beauty with the soles of my feet connecting to the Earth with every step. You have given me hope that our oceans aren’t gone yet, and that there’s still so much to fight for. You’ve shown me what happens when the people and the government work together to protect its most precious natural resources. You’ve demonstrated my privilege in numerous ways, and I feel humbled to have spent days with those who’s happiness isn’t guided by the materialistic gains that I’m so familiar with back home. . . I don’t think there’s any place quite like here. This is some of the most incredible scuba diving I’ve ever done, and I’m blessed to have been able to come here at all. Thank you to every manta ray, shark, turtle and dolphin that graced us with its presence. Thank you to these insanely pristine coral reefs that have existed for thousands of years. I am constantly in awe of the beauty of this planet, especially in places few choose to explore. . . Feeling so much love and light as I say goodbye to you, Indonesia. I will be back again soon. Xx

| D A Y O C T O P U S | ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Octopus and cephalopods in general are some of the most intelligent and ingenious creatures in the oceans, it’s about the closest thing you can get to meeting an alien on Earth. Over millions of years of evolution, they are able to match the colors and textures of their immediate surroundings. They also have a complex bundle of neurons that allows them to independently move hundreds of suckers on each arm. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, these amazing animals may lose their ability to see as the oceans warm due to climate change. In a recent article in the Journal of Experimental Biology, researchers found that as they decreased the amount of oxygen octopus tanks, their retinal activity dropped between 60-100% that could then be reestablished after increasing the oxygen content (2019 ). But why is deoxygenation occurring? As the ocean warms, the water becomes less soluble to gases like oxygen. It also alters circulation patterns that allow for the mixing of shallow warm and deeper cold water (Oschlies, 2018 ). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Every day I read articles about animals and ecosystems that all come back to our number one problem: the climate emergency. And the only way we can fix what we’ve continued to break at the past 30 years is by a massive global transformation towards renewable energy, plant-based diets and not exploiting our precious and finite resources the Earth has blessed us with. Use your consumer power by purchasing products that are created or farmed with the planet in mind, and VOTE VOTE VOTE. What if the earth lost all it’s coral reefs? The world has lost roughly half its coral reefs in the last 30 years. Even if the world could halt global warming now, scientists still expect that more than 90 percent of corals will die by 2050. Without drastic human intervention, we risk losing them all. Coral reefs take up 1% of the world’s oceans. So, it’s no big deal right? Wrong. That 1% sustains a quarter of all the marine animals in the ocean. Two million species live in, on, and around the reefs. For them, corals have been providing food and shelter for 50 million years. What about us? Would humans be affected too? Yes. Since reefs support fish, they also support the fisheries, feeding and giving jobs to 500 million people that live in tropical countries. The local tourism industries would crash. Coastlines would no longer be protected from flooding in extreme storms. Coral provides a natural breakwater, and a buffer against erosion. It’s hard to predict what else the disruption to the food chain and biodiversity of the oceans would lead to. Sure enough, that wouldn’t be pretty. 🌊 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #maldives #maldivesislands #discoveraddu #iloveaddu #coralreef #wethereef #savethereef #chasingcoral #ourblueplanet #reef #vsco

Young @IvanaCook has been volunteering for the @CoralGardeners in Moorea as a photographer. Many of the images you see on their beautifully-curated page were created by this young photographer. Ivana and I spent some time free diving to photograph the severe bleaching being experienced by Moorea's coral reef. She is now heading home and the @CoralGardeners will need a new volunteer photographer. Interested? DM @toutiess and find out how you can help fulfill their mission! The best way to find hope is through action. We all can do something today! #WeTheReef #TurningTheTide #extinctionendshere
