A few months ago, I journeyed to Hong Kong. An archipelago comprising of skyscrapers, bustling city life, ancient temples, a cultural melting pot rich in history - I could not wait to get out and explore it all. One thing that I was not fully prepared for was seeing streets of food shops selling coveted shark fins. Bags and bags full to the brim lined shop floors, while windows were adorned with prized whale and basking shark fins 😔 It is estimated that over 11,000 sharks are killed every hour. They are victims of bycatch, fishing nets and lines and mercilessly killed for shark fin soup. In many cases, the fins are chopped off and the shark's bodies are thrown back into the sea, left to drown. Eating shark fin soup is not a part of Asian culture. It is purely a status symbol to boast one's wealth. One's greed and self worth is responsible for the decline in shark populations globally. Consequently, many shark species are now endangered. They are apex predators that play an extremely important role in our eco system. It is simply not sustainable for so many to be killed year in, year out. Shark fishermen who hunt sharks for SFS are not to blame here. Their work is highly dangerous and not well paid. The middle man reaping in the obscene profits from this trade is the villain in this scenario. The consumers that bank role this trade must also bear their share of significant responsibility. It fills me with sadness to see the havoc that is being wreaked on marine life. The massacre of these majestic creatures needs to end. Sharks are faaaar more valuable alive than dead 💙🦈 #ilovesharks #hongkong #savetheocean #wethereef #savethereef #hongkong #sharkfinsoup #helpsavesharks #sharkweek #thereisnoplanetb

Repost from @cristinamittermeier ——— Out of all the myths that hold back the environmental and conservation movement the worst might be the myth that 'climate change won't affect me.' If you aren't a polar bear or a coral polyp, and if you don't live near the coast or on a tiny island in the South Pacific, it may be hard to recognize climate change when you see it, and even harder to recognize when it is affecting you. For the last decade international media has been overwhelmed by an influx of news stories about record-breaking heat waves and land ravaged by forest fires; storms are more frequent, hurricanes more intense, floods more dangerous. Apathy and indifference are killers in cloaks. In French Polynesia, a group of young people saw what climate change was doing to the coral around their island. They started a non-profit to try and replenish the reef, and called themselves @CoralGardeners This spring, I got to meet this incredible team on expedition with @SeaLegacy and @Candace Crespi and plant some corals with them. It was an experience that inspired me, and that filled me with hope for our ocean. The @CoralGardeners are proof of what can be accomplished with initiative and nerve. Go to the link in my bio to find out how you can adopt a coral. #TurningTheTide #WeTheReef

A lone Wolf in healthy coral.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One of the most common ways in which coral bleaching occurs when corals are stressed by unusual changes in their environment, like the warming temperatures of the sea. The corals release an algae which causes the coral to turn white and not the beautiful array of colors that make these things magnificent. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 💙⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The only way to solve this problem is to address the root cause of global warming. We must reduce greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible and all live a more carbon positive lifestyle 🙏✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo by @chrisleidyphotography ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #savethereef #wethereef #coralgardeners #coralbleaching #coralreef #climatechange #coralbleaching #globalwarming #instaocean #marinebiology #conservation #nature #sustainability #climate #science

The first time I saw a coral reef was when I was about 9 years old. My parents took me to Hawaii for Christmas. To this day I can vividly remember the bright colours of the corals, the vast amount and diversity of fish, turtles and other marine animals. Spending all day snorkelling the reef was the moment I connected with the sea. Back home I would read books (being a child of the 80’s ) over and over again on reefs, fish and other marine life, imagining I was right there with them again. 30 years later almost half of Hawaii’s reefs have suffered extreme bleaching. The reefs that haven’t suffered are not as I remember, nor is the diversity of marine life I saw as a child. Climate change is only a part of our reefs threats. Sunscreen, water pollution, tourism, overfishing and destructive fishing practices are just some of the additional threats our reefs face. However, it is exciting and uplifting to see all the progress we have made to reverse the damage and protect our reefs globally! I have such gratitude for all those who dedicate their time and effort toward saving our reefs 🐠

Here is Tehapai, one of our volunteers, gently holding a coral of the species "Pocillopora verrucosa". Tehapai found this broken piece of coral on the sand; half of it was already dead. He will remove the dead part with coral clippers and attach a bamboo stem before moving the coral to our nursery for four weeks. When our scientists estimate that the coral is strong enough, Tehapai and the crew will plant it onto damaged areas of reef, giving it new life. Adopt your coral on our website. I know some people are working on this in the Colombian caribbean, but how can we grow more projects like this? . #Repost @coralgardeners ・・・ This is Lea, one of our scientists. Blue is a place we share. It is where we come from, here @ravaray and @lolotatau are dancing. The wildlife around them, the light, everything is part of the dance. This life is mainly sustained by corals. They are home to the most diverse ecosystem of the planet. The ocean and it’s animals all rely on corals. This is why we are planting them daily into the ocean with @coralgardeners You can adopt you corals on our website and help preserve our oceans, link is on @coralgardeners home page. #wethereef #tahiti #frenchpolynesia

Since I was a little kid, I have always been fascinated by these reef caves. It is amazing to think that microscopic animals built these barrier reefs millimetre by millimetre. Thousands of years after, they are still protecting our islands and us. We are the new guardians of the reef. Our @coralgardeners journey is just starting. “I remember diving at this place when I was a little kid, it was colorful, full of life. Now it’s all gone, from the corals to the fish, everything is dead” 🌊 Our friends @coralgardeners are a group of young #activists from Mo’orea, French Polynesia, who are restoring their reefs through coral gardening and education. We screened their latest film at #OceanHeroes Bootcamp 2019. Tap through to 👉 coralgardeners.org 👈 to learn more about their work and to adopt and name your own coral! 📽️ @reefhunter / Edited by @johansachsse / Song: @son_lux #coralgardeners #savethereef #wethereef

Repost @chasingcoral ・・・ “Finding the right conditions to make a split shot, like this one takes time, luck, and patience. It must be a calm day so that it is possible to approach the delicate coral formations without getting tossed around by the waves; there has to be an interesting sky to color the upper part of the image, and most importantly, you have to find a piece of healthy coral reef, which is becoming increasingly difficult. I love making images like this one that celebrate the beauty of our oceans and remind us of how special coral reefs are... May it remind you that there is hope and that saving our planet’s coral reefs is worth fighting for.” - Caption and image via @cristinamittermeier #wethereef @coralgardeners #chasingcoral
