Given the diameter, height, and mass of #GMTelescope 's enclosure, the GMT's ability to complete a rotation in 3.5 minutes is considered reasonably “fast”. At the outer radius of the enclosure, the speed is about 1 meter/second (3.6 km/hour, 2.25 MPH ), or leisurely walking speed. #TelescopeTuesday #astronomy #telescope #science #scienceproject

Despite the name card saying otherwise, this is definitely *not* Artemis Westenberg. 🤓 Instead, we see the smiling--as usual--Dr. John Grunsfeld. Astronaut and physicist, he flew to space on a number of occasions to work on one of humankind's grandest technological achievements: @nasahubble

Saturn has 62 moons, but it may not have always been that way. We now think that Saturn's rings may be the remnants of an ancient moon, no longer there. Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, a colorful and vibrant cosmic bouquet 💐 , by the very talented Shadi Nassri @shadinassri Check Instastories to know more about Shadi’s work and the workshop he will be giving soon and don’t forget to give him a follow! The blue nebula glows from nearby star Rho Ophiuchi, a multiple star system 400 light-years distant. The red nebula, is energized by Sigma Scorpii, (traditionally "Al Niyat" النياط ) located about 700 light-years away. Antares or قلب العقرب, shines in a yellowish hue. Right of Antares is the globular cluster Messier 4. The dark filaments extending left are the dense clouds of gas and dust, blocking light from behind • Technicals from Shadi: Nikon D810a, 70-200 lens at 135mm, f4 and iso 1600, using Ioptron sky guider pro mount 20 light frames, also darks, flat and bias. After nearly 16 years of exploring the cosmos in infrared light, #NASA 's #Spitzer #Space #Telescope will be switched off permanently on Jan. 30, 2020. By then, the #spacecraft will have operated for more than 11 years beyond its prime mission, thanks to the #Spitzer engineering team's ability to address unique challenges as the telescope slips farther and farther from #Earth Read on: https://go.nasa.gov/2IontZe

Jupiter on 6 January 2019 at 13:05 UTC. Capturing data was very difficult due to clouds and poor seeing. Unfortunately, I missed a potentially great opportunity to catch Jupiter yesterday by sleeping through my alarm. Notes: The North Temperate Belt appears to have completely faded. The North Equatorial Belt is very dark. The Equatorial Zone appears to have continued to darken through solar conjunction. The Great Red Spot potentially has no wake trailing it. Images taken by Jeff Hester and Pal Scowen in 1995 using @nasahubble the 'Pillars of Creation' is probably the most famous astronomical image of the 20th Century. Taken in visible light using a combination of SII/H-alpha and OIII filters, it shows a part of the Eagle Nebula where new stars are forming. The tallest pillar is around 4 light-years high. This region of active current star formation is about 7000 light-years distant. A spire of gas that can be seen coming off the nebula in the northeastern part is approximately 9.5 light-years or about 90 trillion kilometers long and 1 to 2 million years old. This star is called “Deneb Dulfim”. It’s part of the “Delphinus” constellation, and is allegedly 358 light years away. This kind of image clarity, and color depiction , is not attainable from the foothills 15 miles from my house. The supporting evidence suggests that all luminaries- stars, planets, the sun, and moon, are within your circle of sight. Your circle of sight has several variables, but one constant- your eyes are limited. Objects can be observed at greater distances with altitude, but they lose clarity, and become pixelated beyond 10 miles. #denebdulphim #star #delphinusconstellation #constellation #luminary #nightsky #starphotography #luminaryphotography #fullmoon #nightskyphotography #localstar #localluminary #questioneverything #truthseeker #truth #startrails #flatearth #p1000 #3000mmzoom #nikon #lookup #telescope #thinkcritically

This video was captured on June 4th, 2019. It was a little bit of a hazy night, but my iPhone 8 camera still managed to hold onto those ever-present rings surrounding Saturn that were visible through the telescope. I’m posting this video here as a reference when I start tracking my progress of planetary photography. That way, I can look back and see how lousy this video really is. Experience has demonstrated that, as long as humankind addresses the challenges of exploring mankind’s common frontier of space, many tangible societal benefits are produced, and in addition to those most commonly anticipated, a great variety of valuable innovations are generated serendipitously, for this is the nature of discovery. 💬 Comment your thoughts below?👇👇👇 😃Tag someone who needs to see this! ⏰ Follow us for more! ◾Dm us for free shout out. 🤗 📷 Credits: @sherif arts

The Fishhead Nebula. To some, this nebula looks like the head of a fish. However, this colorful cosmic portrait really features glowing gas and obscuring dust clouds in IC 1795, a star forming region in the northern constellation Cassiopeia.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ Located just over 6,000 light-years away, the larger star forming complex sprawls along the Perseus spiral arm of our Milky Way Galaxy. At that distance, this picture would span about 70 light-years across IC 1795.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣ 💬 What do you think of this nebula?⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⁣ Image Credit & Copyright: Bill Snyder⁣ Follow @next_level_growth
