Dunvegan Castle, built on a rocky outcrop on the shore of Loch Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye, is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and has been the ancestral home of the Chiefs of clan MacLeod for 800 years. Many fine Jacobite relics are displayed there, the most famous being the tattered remnants of the Fairy Flag with its miraculous powers. Legend has it that under this sacred banner, the clan MacLeod will defeat their enemies. Over the years a warm Highland welcome has been extended to many visitors including Sir Walter Scott, Flora MacDonald, Queen Elizabeth II - and now us!

Evening by the River . The River Clyde is one of the most important stream for Scotland economy and history. Until the collapse of the ship building industry, River Clyde was a major provider of ships worldwide. At one point, from the 19th century to the 1950's, the River Clyde area was building 75% of the world's ships. . . #scotland #scottish #scotlandtourism #scotlandhistory #glasgow #glasgowhistory #riverclyde #riverclydehistory #sunset #bridge #bridgephotography #yellow #yellowcoat #travel #travelphotography #europe

Genuinely a blast from the past. My dad toured Scotland in the late 50s and 60s by bike and by scooter. He took literally hundreds of slides and photos which my brother in Seattle ended up with and he's now started digitising them. This is the Bealach Na Ba road in Applecross. No idea when it was taken exactly but the view is still the same. Plan is to go and visit the places in them & do a then & now shot. #scotland #oldscotland #scotlandhistory #scotlandscenery #ig_scotland #retro #vintage #visitscotland #filmphotography #film #slides #scotlandfromtheroadside #explore #explorescotland #landscape #landscapephotography

I've spent much time exploring some of Scotland's less well known castles this summer. 🏰 The varied history and interesting discoveries at each castle have made the trips very interesting. I've just written a blog called '5 Unknown Scottish Castles That Blew Me Away' Head over to my website now to read and discover some of these places for yourself - link in bio. #scotland #visitscotland #visitabdn #bestofourshire #hiddenscotland #unlimitedscotland #aberdeenshire #scotlandisnow #castlesofscotland #scottishcastles #tolquhoncastle #castle #scotlandhistory #scotlandtravel #historicscotland #potd #OMGB #ilovescotland #bbcscotland #britain_greatshots #castles_oftheworld #castlesoftheworld

Had so much on my plate this summer, I've taken only one photo since Scotland. But I took SO many there that I don't mind sifting through them to find ones worth sharing. Portsoy is a small fishing village along the north-east coast, east of Inverness. Rugged beauty. 🧡

A detail of the silver inlay on an early Scottish dagger to be available later this week on our new website. The initials, which appear to be ‘IRC’, are more difficult to understand and interpret as they could quite possibly be the initials of the (now unknown ) owner. ‘IRC’ is also to be found on the blade of a dudgeon dagger in the Bargello Museum, Florence, which has been interpreted as being the cipher of James VI of Scotland (‘Jacobus Rex 6’ ),previous to his coronation as King of England in 1603, therefore dating this dagger likely to the period 1567-1603. As has been noted in previous research where the cipher I.R. 6 appears in the Chapel Royal, Stirling Castle, the ‘6’ takes the same unusual form as it does on the Bargello blade, resembling, in fact a C with scrolled ends.’ It is likely that this is what the ‘IRC’ stands for on this dagger and was likely an indication of the owners loyalty and support for that monarch. The Cross of St. Andrew also found on the blade are well known on Scottish arms and armor and the heart motif is also found on Scottish pieces. The other motifs, however, appear unintelligible at this time though likely had some clan significance for the owner. #armsandarmour #armsandarmor #scottisharms #scottishweapons #scottishdirk #kingjames #antiquearms #antiqueweapons #antiqueknife #armsandantiques #armsandarmorlove #scottishart #scotlandhistory #scotlandvengland #scottishroyalty

The National Wallace Monument turns 150 today! Completed on this day in 1869, the monument commemorates Scotland's 13th century hero Sir William Wallace. We created the centrepiece film for the new Hall of Arms Gallery within the monument – a dramatic and emotional depiction of key moments from Wallace's life. The film is displayed on a bespoke curved screen and presented in eight different languages, with animation by @flaptraps and music by @gileslamb@thewallacemon are putting on a special series of events and activities to mark the anniversary - well worth a visit! @studioarc_design #Wallace150 #WallaceMonument #Animation #AnimatedFilm #Film #digitalart #motiongraphics #illustration #StirlingBridge #Battle #1297 #WilliamWallace #AndrewdeMoray #LoveScotland #ScotlandHistory #Medieval #Design #Exhibition #NationalWallaceMonument #Scotland #Stirling #visitscotland #WilliamWallace #ImmersiveFilm

Today, we were in the south of Edinburgh to visit the enigmatic Rosslyn Chapel, a legendary gem of architecture resulting to numerous speculations. It has been thought by William Sinclair and is home to a myriad of symbols linked to several beliefs and religions.🍃 The most intriguing symbol is the one that can be found in an arch, that looks like an ear of corn, surprising when you know that the Chapel was finished in 1446, 50 years before the discovery of the America by C. COLOMBUS that imported corn in Europe. Puzzling, isn't it? Would it be something the Vikings did?🌽🤷‍♂️ There are so many other things to be said about the Rosslyn Chapel, but if you like mystery and codes, do not hesitate to visit this fantastic monument ! Who knows, you might find some ghosts wandering around, or William the cat, Guardian of the place, being comfy inside the Chapel...🐱 #scotlandexplore #scotlandchapel #scotlandtrip #scotlandhistory #historyfact #davincicode #photographer #photography

The blade of a very rare circa 1600 Scottish/England borderlands dudgeon dagger. The blade belonging to a particular form of dagger known as a ‘dudgeon’ dagger (see Royal Armories Acc. Nr. X.1293, dated 1603 ). ‘Dudgeon’ was simply a word for wood and this type of dagger was the descendant of the medieval ballock knife and predecessor of the Scottish dirk. It was made in the Scottish lowlands between about 1590-1630 and the blades of these daggers are similar to this example; of diamond –shape cross-section and often with flat panels at the ricasso. The inscription on the blade inlaid in silver similar to 17th century Scottish pistols reads: ‘MY HOP AND TREST IS IN YE LORD GOD’ (‘My Hope and Trust is in the Lord God’ ) is very much in keeping with the sentiment and style one finds on other similar blades of such daggers. For example one dagger, noted as being in a private collection in 1963, is inscribed exactly as our example: ‘MY HOP AND TREST IS IN YE LORD GOD’ and other examples from the same period bear variations on this pious motto. It appears to be a corruption or based upon, and shortened form of, a phrase from the Bible – Isaiah 44, v. 4: ‘Trust ye in the LORD....’. A dagger in excavated condition in the National Museums of Scotland, of about 1600 bears a similar inscription: ([MY] TRUST IS ONLIE IN YE LORDE QUA [MAKETH] ALL THINGS’ – also from Isaiah ). This motto was extremely popular in 17th century Scotland. Follow us as we launch our new website this week where this dagger will be available for sale. #armsandarmor #armsandarmour #armsandantiques #scottishdirk #antiquesword #antiquehelmet #dudgeon #antiqueweapons #antiquearms #antiquedealersofinstagram #knives #blades #swords #antiquearmor #armor #armour #scottishhistory #helmet #skeandubh #biblical #scotlandhistory #kingsofscotland #scottishroyalty #antiquesforsale #antiques #antiquecollection #antiquecollector #isaiah44

Thanks to the permission of James Taylor, his 1992 booklet “The Vanishing Laird Lord Pitsligo” is now scanned and included in the Clan Forbes Reference Library in the Members section of the website. This 27-page book includes photographs of modern-day locations and details of the remarkable “disappearance” of Alexander Forbes, 4th Lord Pitsligo, who was “Head of Horse” or cavalry commander for Charles Edward Stuart, the “Bonnie Prince Charlie” of the Jacobite Uprising of 1745. The King and Queen Knot below Stirling Castle, Stirling. Scotland. This collection of lumps and bumps below Stirling Castle dates back to the 1100’s AD and is all that remains of the Royal gardens. The high volcanic rock of the Castle had very limited space for gardens and the high ground was too important to use valuable space for leisure. The banks and ditches we see today were constructed for the Scottish coronation of King Charles II in 1633. Beyond is the Kings Park, a historic Royal Hunting ground where the king and his entourage would hunt deer on horseback and hunt with falcons. The gardens were planted with ‘knots’ or beds of plants for ladies to walk through and ornamental ponds held fish, whilst exotic imported birds such as cranes, pelican and Swans wandered in the gardens. James V even kept a pet lion! #visitscotlandtours #stirling #stirlingcastle #kingsknot #scottishhistory #visitscotland #scotland_lover #scotland_insta #scotland_ig #scotlandexplore #scotlandshots #scotlandsites #scotlandhistory

Last call - only one hotel room left for the 17 – 23 August 2020 Clan Forbes Tour! On day six, our first stop will be Corgarff Castle built in the mid-16th century by Forbes of Towie. This was the site of the tragic murder of Mistress Margaret Campbell Forbes and her daughters by Adam Gordon as relayed in the ballad “Edom o’ Gordon.” The rest of the day will be devoted to the Clan Forbes own Lonach Highland Gathering and Games, the friendliest Highland Games in Scotland. The Lonach Highland and Friendly Society was founded in 1823 by Sir Charles Forbes, 1st Baronet of Newe and Edinglassie (1773-1849 ).
