#repost via @instarepost20 from @beverlyjoubert It was back in January when we watched this tiny cub battle with a pride that she’d accidentally stumbled into with her brother. Against all odds she fought on and was eventually accepted as one of the pride’s own, behavior that we’d never seen before. It seems that she may have used another of her 9 lives over the past 2 weeks. After straggling, she lost her new pride and spent the last fortnight searching for them. She’s much bigger than in this picture but is nowhere near old enough to look after herself, and yet somehow she managed. We’ve just heard that she has once again reunited with her adoptive pride who went in search of her. Hopefully she’s learned a valuable lesson. We’ve certainly learnt a great deal about lions’ bonds - even connecting with a wandering cub who is not their own. #lostcub #twicelost #okavangolions #closecall #lion #nature #bigcats #cat #catsofinstagram #nationalgeographic #africa #latergram

• • • • • • Photo by @beverlyjoubert | Over grass drenched with rain from a summer storm, a young lion moves to investigate a mushroom from the ink cap family. He's suffering from a bad eye infection that his siblings also have had but from which they're slowly recovering. He approached the mushroom with purpose and then promptly ate it. It's not that unusual—many species of cats have been known to be attracted to mushrooms—and apparently it's because they're on the hunt for protein. The high glutamate levels in fungi activate cats' umami receptors, signaling that they are protein-rich and edible. Of course many fungi species are not edible, and no doubt mistakes are made by felines around the world, but this ink cap didn't seem to do him any harm. Who knows, perhaps it could even help with that eye infection? #littlebigcats #Okavangolions #mushroomeatingcats #natgeo

Photo by Beverly Joubert @beverlyjoubert | A territorial male patrols his territory in Duba Plains in the Okavango. The cool early morning is the perfect time for his roars to be heard over long distances, alerting any intruders to his presence and his intention to protect what is his. The life of a male lion is not necessarily an easy one. Even if he is lucky enough to hold a territory and a pride who will help provide food, there are always young males looking for somewhere to settle that may challenge his rule. If those intruders have teamed up to form a coalition, they stand a much better chance of taking (and holding on to ) a territory. #ThisIsMyTrophy #okavangolions #bigcats

#CampaignforNature #redlechwe #okavango #DubaPlains #lechwe #linkedecosystem #antilope #okavangolions #masai #masaimara #masaimaranationalpark #portrait #retrato #retratosanimales #animallover #animals #animales #nature #naturaleza #landscape #photo #foto #places #skyline #sky #campo #place #ciervo #drone #drones

#Repost from @National Geographic by @swiftsave_app ••• Photo by Beverly Joubert @beverlyjoubert | It's the end for a male red lechwe. It's a remarkable thing that lions can catch an antelope that is so well adapted to water and can run through swamps at enormous speed. However, the Okavango lions won't waste unnecessary energy and know exactly when they have the best chance. The sharp crack of horn against horn echoing across the plains lets the lions know that there are lechwe fighting for dominance, territory, and a female herd. These territorial disputes are so intense that the lechwe tend to forget everything except their immediate opponent—and often don't see a sneaking lion until it's too late. #Okavangolions #ThisIsMyTrophy #TsaroPride #circleoflife

A pride male is always watching... Young males are frequently skirting the periphery of territories, looking for a place of their own, but they won’t be tolerated. Photo by @beverlyjoubert | A lion crosses a deep Okavango channel. Whether patrolling territory or hunting lechwe or buffalo, this is a daily necessity for these swamp lions and it is not without danger. Hippos and crocodiles frequent these waters. The lions will often snarl and growl as they cross, aware of the risks, and even if they remain quiet, the concentration in those wild eyes is very evident. #thisismytrophy #bigcats #okavangolions

Reposted from @beverlyjoubert - Another day, another hunt. A baby lechwe doesn’t go very far amongst hungry lions. It time to head back out into the swamps and see if today she will be lucky in hunting again. #thisismytrophy #okavangolions #tsaropride - #regrann
