For #tributetuesday we look at Louie Joe, the last vegetable peddler in Rossland. Until 1949, he lived and worked in his garden area just below Thompson Avenue. He was remembered as very sociable and friendly, who spoke English and could translate for the Chinese community. The Chinese Garden markets appear to have begun in the late 1890's. Peddlers would sell door to door with large baskets carried with poles. Today, you can see remnants of the Chinese Garden in Lower Rossland along the trail that was named after Louie Joe. Here we have Louie Joe circa 1940.If you are interested in Chinese History in BC we are currently hosting a travelling exhibit from the Royal BC Museum called Gold Mountain Dream 金山梦. From the Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre collection digitized courtesy of the Columbia Basin Institute of Regional History. Do you have original photos capturing Rossland’s storied history? Consider donating them to the Museum. You can even retain your original, and we’ll scan it for the collection.Photo #:2313.0359 . . . . . #rosslandmuseum #museum #history #naturalhistory #rossland #metalsmountainsmemories #instamuseum #goldrush #rosslandmines #canadashistory #rosslandbc #rossland #rosslandhistory #bchistory #bcmuseums #howdoyoumuseum #ilovemuseums

@ironfirebrewing #51/50 Joaquin Murrieta Although considered a hero at the time, he by all definitions was a serial killer. Joaquín Murrieta encountered prejudice and hostility in the extreme competition of the rough mining camps. While mining for gold, he and his wife supposedly were attacked by American miners jealous of his success. They allegedly beat him and raped his wife. However, the source for these events is not considered reliable, as it was a dime novel, The Life and Adventures of Joaquín Murieta, written by John Rollin Ridge and published in 1854. Latta wrote that Joaquín Murrieta's gang had well organized bands, one led by himself and the rest led by one or two of his Sonoran relatives that he had grown up with. Latta documented that the core of these men had first gathered to help Murrieta kill at least six of the Americans who had summarily hanged his stepbrother Jesus Carrillo and whipped him on the false charge of the theft of a mule. They then regularly engaged in illegal horse trade with Mexico, with stolen horses and legally captured mustangs. Bands of his gang when not engaged in the horse trade robbed and killed miners or settlers, particularly those returning from the California goldfields. The gang is believed to have killed up to 28 Chinese and 13 Anglo-Americans. This figure only takes account of the reports from their raids in early 1853. On July 25, 1853, a group of Rangers encountered a band of armed Mexican men near Arroyo de Cantua on the edge of the Diablo Range near Coalinga, California. In the confrontation, three of the Mexicans were killed. They claimed one was Murrieta, and another Manuel Garcia, also known as Three-Fingered Jack, one of his most notorious associates. Two others were captured. As proof of the outlaws' deaths, the Rangers cut off Three-Fingered Jack's hand, and the alleged Murrieta's head, and preserved them in a jar of alcohol to bring to the authorities for their reward. . . . #beer #serialkiller #murrieta #brewing #beertography #instabeer #beerstagram #beerme #beergeek #history

Gregorio Cortez Lira, a ranchhand of Mexican parentage, was virtually unknown until one summer day in 1901 when he and a Texas sheriff, pistols in hand, blazed away at each other after a misunderstanding. The sheriff was killed and Gregorio fled immediately, realizing that in practice there was one law for Anglo-Texans, another for Texas-Mexicans. The chase, capture, and imprisonment of Cortez are high drama that cannot easily be forgotten. Even today, in the cantinas along both sides of the Rio Grande, Mexicans sing the praises of the great "sheriff-killer" in the ballad which they call "El Corrido de Gregorio Cortez." . Americo Paredes tells the story of Cortez, the man and the legend, in vivid, fascinating detail in "With His Pistol in His Hand," which also presents a unique study of a ballad in the making. Deftly woven into the story are interpretations of the Border country, its history, its people, and their folkways. . . . #GregorioCortez #Cortez #AmericoParedes #Book #Folktale #MexicanAmerican #HispanicHeritigeMonth #LibraryBook #history #legend

Sorry for not posting for a week. Life has just been busy. Born around 1412, Jeanne d’Arc (or in English Joan of Arc ) was a peasant girl from Doméry, France. During her adolescence, Joan’s mother instilled a deep faith in Catholicism into Joan, who began to hear voices that she claimed belonged to Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret. Starting seventy five years prior to Joan’s birth, the Hundred Years War continued to rampage on as England increased its holding on French territory. As a French defeat seemed imminent, Joan believed the voices called on her to expel the English from France and crown Charles VII as the rightful ruler of France. In May 1428, Joan first traveled to the French stronghold of Vaucouleurs, but her proposal to lead the French army was rejected by Robert de Baudicourt. However, Joan gained support due to a prophecy declaring that a Virgin would save France. Joan, dressed in men's clothing, then traveled to the French Court in Chinon where Charles resided. Against the advice of his generals, Charles granted her request and Joan set off to Orléans dressed as a knight. After sending the English forces a letter demanding their surrender, in March of 1429 Joan led a successful victory at Orléans. Two months later, Charles was declared King of France, fulfilling part of Joan’s prophecy. Joan continued to lead the French Army to victory and became a nationally beloved figure in France. However, in 1430, the English and their Burgundian allies captured Joan. Charles refuses to pay ransom and “the maiden” was tried and convicted by a pro-English bishop of 70 charges including witchcraft, heresy, and dressing like a man. On May 30, 1431, Joan was burned at the stake. However, Joan’s death only invigorated the French Army, who continued achieving victory and drove the English out of Aquitaine in the 1440s. Over two decades after Joan of Arc’s death, Charles VII requested the pope to retry Joan, who declared Joan a martyr. For her bravery and ability to unify France, Joan of Arc became a political symbol of France. Almost five centuries after her death, Pope Benedict XV canonized Joan in 1920.

This is Peter and Margie’s home; a beautiful Queenslander that once served as the local school house. I wonder what stories it could tell? . . What memories have been shared? . . What friendships were bonded in this place? . . Today, upgrades have been made that reflect modern conveniences, but there’s a feel to this home that says welcome. . . Yesterday, Peter and Margie showed me the efforts of their hard work; their dedication to make this a beautiful home for themselves, their children and grandchildren. . . Time moves on and plans change. . . Needs alter and lives take alternative paths. . . I’m grateful ~ they asked me. I get to market this beautiful place once more. A common myth about the Middle Ages is that ordinary people never travelled farther than five or six miles from their homes. Freemen would often travel 10 or 20 miles to the nearest large towns and cities, these were the only places many goods and services could be attained. Small towns’ marketplaces only provided the most basic of supplies; grain, thread, candles, etc. If you needed a new cart or medicine for an ailing relative, you would most likely have to travel a day or further to find it. It’s true that most serfs (indentured farmers ) would be provided for by their local lord and therefore have no need to travel any great distance, but free people traveled much further afield. Add to that consideration the many folk tasked with running aspects of the realm’s business, members of the clergy, and those of noble households who are expected to frequent not only their own lands but to be present at any event deemed important enough to the royal family, and you’ll realize that travel was not only common in medieval times, it was nearly unavoidable. Research Matters History 2004 to 2019 15 years - Why Research is vital .... Medulloblastoma the most common malignant pediatric tumor in the central nervous system (CNS ), accounting for nearly 20% of all childhood brain cancers, invasive, rapidly growing tumours that, unlike most brain tumours, spread through the cerebrospinal fluid and frequently metastasize to different locations along the surface of the brain and spinal cord. Metastasis all the way down to the cauda equine at the base of the spinal cord is termed "drop metastasis". The cumulative relative survival rate for all age groups and histology follow-up was 60%, 52%, and 47% at 5 years, 10 years, and 20 years, respectively. Standard treatment includes surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Long-term sequelae of standard treatment include hypothalamic-pituitary and thyroid dysfunction and intellectual impairment. The hormonal and intellectual deficits created by these therapies causes significant impairment of the survivors. Delays in physical and cognitive development, psychiatric illness, dementia, hearing loss, higher risk of second cancers, and increased cardiac disease risks. 2004 Researchers find that by detecting the presence of the ERBB2 protein in tumor samples, doctors might be able to predict which children with the brain tumor medulloblastoma will require alternative therapies. https://www.stjude.org/about-st-jude/history/timeline.html #1960 2005 A gene that's normally silenced after contributing to brain development was found to be expressed in cells from medulloblastoma, the most common form of pediatric brain malignancy in children. Scientists discovered that multiple extra copies of the gene, called OTX2, had been switched back on among tumour cells removed from patients with medulloblastoma brain tumours. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/02/050205075830.htm
