🌟AVAILABLE SUNDAY 12 MIDDAY CEST🌟 The next 'Best of Britain' design I want to reveal may have sneakily popped up here before as a custom, but is graduating to a permanent shop design - this brooch is a take on a stained glass tudor rose, with marbled acrylic 'glass' panels and matte acrylic 'lead'. It's a real eyecatching statement piece (I'll be sure to post a video tomorrow! ) celebrating Britain's rich history. Having moved abroad now I appreciate how lucky we were in the UK to have so many historic buildings and galleries so close by and often either free or relatively low cost to visit. I really miss travelling around on historical visits, and I miss my English Heritage membership (not least because they do a fantastic mulled mead in their gift shops😂.. Really, try it!! ) Although this collection is small, I've enjoyed remembering all the things I miss about Britain, and isn't it lovely to see something about the UK that doesn't involve that other 'B' word at the moment?! 😭🙄

69, Westgate Road is a Grade II Listed building in Westgate, Newcastle upon Tyne. It is a house with a shop although I don't know if any businesses are still trading in it. Restored in 1982-84 It has a Welsh slate roof with beautiful cast iron spires. The building consists of three floors and attic. With masonary stucco, ashlar dressings and quoins, terra-cotta corbel table and moulded eaves, this makes for in my opinion a beautiful building. . . . . . . . . . #englishheritage #historicengland #crestings #grade2 #baywindows #stucco #quoined #ashlar #listedbuilding #historic #architecture #corbels #historicbritain #architecture_hunter #deservetopreserve #preservingbritainsheritage #spires #ornate #myhomecity #thetoon #newcastleupontyne #mybritain #mouldings #toon #thisoldhouse #historicpreservation #northeastheritage #northeastengland

“Old is the new NEW” One of the brilliant things about London, despite being one of the largest modern metropolises in the world with skyscrapers, is that how old things are preserved and used and not turned into a museum. . . This picture here is of the Queen’s House at the Tower of London. It’s architecture is completely different to the rest of the Tower buildings made of bricks and stones. This Tudor style half timbered house was built around the 1540s and is said to be one of the oldest of Tudor houses remaining in Britain. The Queen’s House has been home to some well-known prisoners of Britain’s history notably Guy Fawkes who was interrogated here, in the Council Chamber and confessed to the Gunpowder Plot. It was also home to Arabella Stuart, the first cousin of James I, where she died - her ghost is reputed to haunt the Queen’s House. . . Despite its colourful history, this centuries old house is presently home to the Resident Governor of the Tower of London and guarded by a Royal Guard. The beauty of this old architecture for me is that I don’t find architecture of such delight anymore, with such care and skill and “heart” to details. I’m glad that this “old” is preserved not as a museum but as living, “breathing” and an on-going place. . . What are your thoughts - do you like the old is the new NEW or do you think the old should be preserved as it was and not used? Tell me what you think by Liking this post and commenting ⬇️ . . In the photo, behind the houses is the Shard, London’s tallest building. . . Follow: @my_timeless_footsteps / @my_moments_through_mylens / @insidertrail / . This is very much a test composition for another time of day, but you can see here the potential, with those long shadows cast through the empty windows. I know you could just trawl through other peoples photographs, but I prefer to find my own compositions, even if its almost impossible to do something truly original at Corfe Castle. @nationaltrust . . . . #nikonuk#Wacom#Rode#DJI#benro#fstopgear#landscapephotography#britishlandscapes#visitbritain#wiltshirephotographer#carpediem#photography#photoadventure#phototours#photoholiday#photographyworkshops#visitdorset#corfecastle#historicbritain#nationaltrust

Do you have a favourite castle or ruin you like to visit? If so please leave a suggestion for everyone. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So keeping the theme going of visiting local following my visit to Iford Manor I popped into Farleigh Hungerford Castle on the way back. Again I’ve driven past this place loads of times and it’s actually quite deceiving the size, from the road the entrance is through the East Gatehouse. At first you may think to i drive through there, but the answer is yes as the car park is within the castle grounds. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Castle now a days is a ruin but it was begun before 1383 by Sir Thomas Hungerford (c 1328–1397 ) and was occupied for 300 years by the Hungerford family. It became a ‘romantic ruin’ since 1730s, however it retains two of it’s corner towers, large parts of it courtyard defences and the beautifully preserved chapel. Sir Thomas Hungerford was the first formally recorded speaker of the House of Commons. The castle itself is a fortified mansion ranged around a rectangular courtyard, it was of the ‘quadrangular’ style so having a tall tower in each corner, with the style being fashionable during the 1370s and 1380s (obviously if you had the money!! ). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So that’s only a very brief start to the history, if you are interest more details are on the English Heritage website. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My photos is taken from the South-west tower, looking across the moat with the Chapel to the left and the East gatehouse to the right of the chapel. #photographs_of_britain ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sent via @planoly #planoly #farleighcastle #farleigh #englishheritage #historicproperty #castle 🏰 #farleighhungerfordcastle #castlesofinstagram #yourcastles #castleruins #oldcastle #castles_oftheworld #uk_shooters #castlesoftheworld #lovegreatbritain #bloggersofinstagram #guardiantravelsnaps #icu_britain #kings_village #ruinphotography #igersbath #ruins #historicengland #weloveengland #loveengland #exploreengland #hidden_igers #historicbritain #conservation ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @yourcastles @castlespalaces @igersbath @englishheritage

The Tudor front of Hampton Court Palace is quite the sight as you’re approaching it. I visited in early July, was one of the first in and was there until closing time. I thought the whole place was absolutely brilliant. I’ve been fascinated by Tudor history since school, so seeing and hearing all about Henry VIII, his wives, plus a few things I didn’t know was lots of fun. Henry himself was walking around and I got to see Anne Boleyn (with her head intact 😂 ) and Jane Seymour have a heated debate. The Georgian part of the house is equally stunning, as well as the gardens. Definitely one of the best places I’ve visited for a long while 😁

The history of our villages, the Sibfords, is fascinating. Who'd have thought these little characters could have played such an important part once upon a time... . Credit: the following is taken from 'Sibford in the Domesday book' from https://thesibfords.uk/about/history . "King William rewarded many of the knights who had come over from Normandy with him with gifts of land. One of these was Henry de Ferrières, and the Domesday Book tells us that he owned something like 1,000 acres at Sibford Ferris. Across the valley at Sibford Gower there were two landowners. One, William, son of Corbician, had about 1,000 acres, and the other, with a similar amount of land, was Hugh de Grantmesnil (or Grentemaisnil ). From the Norman baron de Ferrières, came the place-name Sibford Ferris. A charter of 1216 says that “Sibilla, Countess of Ferriers holds land at Sibford”. The same document says that “Thomas Goher holds land there” but Thomas Goher’s land was actually at Sibford Gower, and this may have been how that village acquired its name. Where the name Sibford originated is wrapped in obscurity: perhaps Sheep-ford, there being a ford between the two villages, or Sibba’s Ford, the name given in a document of 1153. For centuries the locals have called the place Zibberd; this may be found on old maps. Burdrop derives its name from the Old English for the hamlet near the burh (a fortified place or manor ). Until times within living memory Sibford Gower and Burdrop were known as Broad Sibford, and Sibford Ferris was Little Sibford.

The White Bear at Clerkenwell is a Grade Il listed pub. I didn’t go in as I was in my way to @therookeryhotel Does anyone even know if it is even still a pub ? I’m only asking as the shutters were up and it was opening time . If anyone knows please comment. I can find a Facebook page with old posts and an old @timeoutlondon reference from 2016 , but @tripadvisor says CLOSED. I would have thought if it was Grade ll listed it should have been kept as a pub, but with so many pubs are closing it wouldn’t be surprising to hear that this one has closed too. #londonpubs #pubsoflondon #londonist #clerkenwell #grade2listed #eastlondon #prettycitylondon #historicbritain #historiclondon #pubsofinstagram #london_only #londonwalks #secretlondon #mydarlinglondon #visitlondon #londonarchitecture #londonr #timeoutlondon #itsolondon #cityoflondon #wondermore #londonstreets @london @uk
