Lunch! I haven't done a food post in ages, but I've been looking forward to this all morning! Leftovers! Couscous with cherry tomatoes, sundries tomatoes and roasted bell peppers and Feta cheese. There was a time when having something different for lunch meant having a ham and cheese wrap rather than a sandwich! There was also a time when I was 5st overweight! Better choices didn't just happen right away...as I discovered how good it feels to exercise, I learned to respect my body a bit more and that meant filling it with nicer, better food. Of course I still eat bread...bread is lovely...carbs are not the enemy! I set myself a challenge for July to try and master pullups...they've always been too hard that I've never persisted. By setting a challenge I had no choice but to keep on trying...this video is day 1 merged with today! Still work to do, but it's proof that if you keep on trying, then you will get there. As with these, you might not get there as quickly as you would want, but being consistent and putting in the effort you will get there eventually! Sunday Rest Day! Ish! A weekend in London...no dog to walk, no gym to go to...I'm exhausted! The Boy enjoyed the "Seniors Playground", yes that's really what they call the outdoor gym! 5th attempt at pull ups. Yesterday I took an unplanned rest day as I've felt under the weather all week...I could have forced myself to try, but I think it would have been so bad I'd have been annoyed at myself! Plus rest days are important too! So today I felt a bit more with it and this was actually my 1st attempt today after a little cardio HIIT on the elliptical and a throw of the weights! Breakfast! Been a while since a food post, but this was too tasty not to! It's pizza night tonight, yep that's right, pizza...I eat pizza! This week is #LonelinessAwarenessWeek It got me thinking only 4 years ago I was part of that gang; a stay-at-home-mum to an almost 2yr old, friends back at work, I was struggling with anxiety, lack of sleep, overweight, miserable and very, very lonely. I'm not the first and I won't be the last and I am always aware that there are plenty of people worse off than me. But it was horrible, I felt horrible and I am glad I don't feel that way any longer. Except it has made me think that I know there must be a lot of people out there that are either in the same boat I was, or feeling lonely for other reasons. It is very difficult to ask for help when you feel like you're just being self-pitying. I get it, I really do. So what I'm proposing, if anyone is up for it, or knows someone who might benefit from it, is a meet-up in the Jephson Gardens this Thursday. Before anyone starts panicking; this is not to do a workout, or throw some weights around the park, nope, I just thought there might be a few people who'd welcome the company and be happy to go for a stroll around the park (the forecast is dry, I checked ) and maybe even a cuppa or an ice cream at the end. Just an hour or so, completely relaxed. No charge, no selling of anything, I just feel like it would be nice to do something nice. So like and share...pushchairs and children welcome, no age limit. So you may know that I used to be...nope...I used to have fat - I wasn't fat, I had it, a lot of it and I lost it. But I do know what it feels like to be at Day 1 and be wearing clothes a size 16/18. This weekend there was an article from a Telegraph Journalist writing about Nike and their introduction of "plus-size" mannequins in some stores with them wearing Nike clothes. The journalist, Tanya Gold writes: 'The new mannequin is obese, and she is not readying herself for a run in her shiny Nike gear. She cannot run. She is, more likely, pre-diabetic and on her way to a hip replacement. What terrible cynicism is this on the part of #Nike ?' Say what?! I understand that some people choose to wear "activewear"/"leisurewear" with no intention at all of doing any activity and that is their choice, but for someone to suggest that displaying clothes in a larger size for fitness has nothing to do with them perhaps wanting to get fit, well that is just stupid. When I started out with this fitness malarkey, seeing a number 16 on the scales, it was really uncomfortable finding something to wear that didn't make me feel even more disgusting than I already felt about myself. I may have been buying size 16/18, but that didn't mean I didn't want to look as nice as possible, to feel somewhat good about myself, as I embarked on something I felt uncomfortable doing. So hats off to Nike...maybe more brands will start doing the same. For a lot of people, especially those not the ones fitting into a size 'Small', seeing mannequins in different shapes/sizes makes you feel accepted, that you do belong in a store that fit and active people go into, that you are welcome, that support is there and that other people in one way or another are cheering you on, even if you don't realise it. If you're starting out and feeling self-conscious just know that there are more people cheering you on than there are Tanya Gold's - she's simply a nob! I love a snack in the afternoon and when I say snack I actually mean a treat! My treats used to be giant slabs of cake...and I wondered why I was 5st heavier than I am now! So whilst I enjoy a bit of cake now and then, I do prefer being the size I am now more! This week is Mental Health Awareness week. Mental Health is just as important as your physical health and I have learned first-hand that improving your physical health can significantly improve your mental health. I've never been one for talking about my feelings, always preferring to either eat them away or quietly sorting out myself in my own head without wanting to "cause a fuss" to anyone else. Just a few years ago I genuinely loathed myself...would look in a mirror and be ashamed, hate everything about what was looking back at me. I didn't sleep because of anxiety...convinced that either something would happen to my son or that I would die and if I didn't die then I would be seriously ill and then die and leave everyone behind me. I didn't talk to anyone about it. Surely I would just be told that I was stupid, or not to be so silly. I wish I had spoken though because I would have realised that I wasn't on my own, that whilst my issues weren't huge compared to a lot of things that people have to struggle with, it doesn't mean they were irrelevant. I could have had help. I'm fortunate in that I did find a way to feel better and for me that is exercise. I lost the 5st that was weighing me down...literally and metaphorically. I discovered that I am stronger than I thought. I continue to exercise now because I choose to. Because it makes me happy. Because it keeps me healthy. When I decided to retrain and become a PT I did it wanting to help people that were like me back then...the physical training is brilliant, I love seeing what clients are capable of, seeing them progress, seeing them lose inches, lose pounds, get stronger, get fitter...but what I love most is seeing the other changes, seeing people feel better about themselves, discovering they can do more than they thought, helping them get there. It is OK not to be OK. It is OK to need help. It is OK to ask for help. It is OK to let someone help you. Personal Training isn't just about sweating, it's not about burning off the calories you consume; it's about helping you be the version of yourself that you are happy being. x #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawarenessweek2019 #gymima #fitfam #fitspo

New Resolution Day for me! 1 per month was my NY Resolution so here is number 5. Time for something a little different! May sees Mental Health Awareness week in the middle of it and I thought it would be appropriate that my resolution this month focuses on that. I make no secret of the fact that the one thing that lead me to change my lifestyle was the fact that I was borderline depressed. 5st overweight, a stay at home mum, struggling to make new friends whilst all of my other friends were out working, filling my face with sugar, struggling to sleep every single night for fear that something dreadful would happen to my little boy and if not him, then me. Totally and utterly loathing myself. I am very fortunate that something inside me changed and there is no doubt about it that changing my lifestyle from an exercise and diet point of you contributed to that massively. For 3 years I've been busy, keeping the weight off, enjoying life, feeling good about myself, retraining and becoming a P.T. now getting to do something I love every single day and in some cases, I hope, making a positive difference to those that I get to work with. The thing is it's very easy to get swept up in routine...doing the same thing day in day out and not really taking proper down time. I'm not talking sitting on the sofa watching Line of Duty, or catching up on whatever is on Netflix...no, real time to just chill out and clear our heads. So my resolution for May is to be more mindful...to take time out in a day to clear my head, to get to bed a bit earlier and get more sleep. I adore exercise, I feel good for exercise and I know that will always play a positive part in mental wellbeing, but it's time to try another angle, something out of my comfort zone. 2 treadmill runs...5km and a bit more for a cool down. Note the heart rate on both days goes right up into peak zone very early on...this is simply my head saying "I can't do this, I don't want to do this." Recognise that feeling? After a while it shuts the heck up and gets on with it...settling down and gradually rising as you would expect as the legs get tired. So sometimes you need to ignore your head if something feels hard and just dig deep because you can do it...you just have to keep on at it. The thing with being on holiday is that I don't get my daily dog kilometres in as the sun comes up! I went for a run yesterday morning, but today preferred a warm duvet! It's about balance! It did mean that this afternoon while the boy went for a nice swim, I took advantage of a mini-gym! Nothing over the top, just 30mins on a treadmill overlooking a carpark! 5km cleared my head before a trip to the arcades! Everyone's a winner! Something is always better than nothing and for my own sanity a workout makes me feel good and I don't feel bad about that one bit. Exercise doesn't have to be punishment for what you have eaten, it's about looking after the one body that you've got and letting it look after you too. Might be on my holiday, but that's no reason not to squeeze in a workout! A 5km run this morning, a day at the zoo and despite being quite comfy once the boy went to sleep I dragged my bum off the sofa knowing I'd feel more satisfied having done something than nothing! A great kettlebell workout...I may use the 12kg at home, but an 8kg does just the trick and fits perfectly into the boot by the spare wheel! Even got HR rate up into cardio zone! Then had a good go with resistance tubes and bands to get a full body workout in. Super satisfying! My Lent Challenge of 40 Tips a Day finished today...because I didn't leave the Sundays blank (which is what you can do in Lent on a Sunday...that's right, if you've given something up for Lent you can have it on Sunday! ). So for the next week, to see us to Easter Sunday, I'm going to share 1 exercise a day and by Sunday they'll be a perfect sequence for a HIIT Workout. I adore HIIT workouts for clients...they might not be able to commit to 3 x 45mins workouts between our sessions, but 21 minutes? Who can't find that in a day really? Efficient, fun and you push yourself at your pace. 30 secs on and 30 off? Build up to 45 on and 15 off. By Sunday you'll have 7 exercises to go through 3 times...your own HIIT workout...beats an Easter Egg! My trusty helper is my boy. He willingly and happily helps. So I've agreed with some clients to do a Race For Life in a couple of months. Aside from some treadmill HIIT workouts and a dog walk the other week which involved jogging (a dog jog if you will! ), it's actually been a long time since I ran regularly. Today with a morning free once the boy was at school, I hit a treadmill and did a run I'm quite proud of, especially as it was after a 7km dog walk at 6 this morning! Not sure how my legs will feel later, but home now and a @nakdwholefoods bar is just the treat to keep me going until lunch. I never eat fruit...freaks me out with the textures, but 1 of these bars counts as a portion...so that's got to be good! So when you spend your time either designing workouts for other people, or delivering and helping people with those workouts...well what happens to a PT's workout? I've been good...I still workout of course, but a few years ago when I was ridding myself of 5st, well it was like there was more purpose to my own workouts. Each month this year I'm choosing a new resolution and for April I am going to stick to this workout plan...now it's not as detailed as one would be for a client, but it's highlighting what needs work on that day to make sure that across the weeks all of me gets worked out from top to bottom! Where is time going? Seriously! How are we nearly in April? It's been a busy few weeks and I'm slowly getting used to my own workouts needing to be entirely flexible as it has to fit in around my own clients. It's a good lesson though; I'm increasingly finding different ways to workout, different moves, routines, ways to do things in the time and space available...and it's nice that there's so much you can do. Tonight...despite a day at home with a poorly 5yr old, after a night of bad sleep, once I'd seen clients instead of going home to drink tea I made myself nip into the gym and do a 20min HIIT session on the treadmill and then a play with the weights...barbell squats and deadlifts...40kg no less today...plus the bar! On it! It's not easy to stay motivated all of the time. It's not easy to put 100% into each and every workout. It is easy to decide whether to go back to square one...an extra 5 stone, no fitness level, total self-loathing and 0 confidence...not a chance. That's my motivation. That's why I go and workout when I don't always want to. It's why I choose to eat well (the majority of the time ). It's why I want other people to discover that fitness and exercise and making a change to your life is a positive. Dinner. Homemade Spaghetti Bolognese. Such a tasty food day today. I made the Bolognese last week...enough for 2 meals for us all and it did not disappoint! There's celery, tomatoes, onions, carrots and mushrooms as well as 5% beef mince because why use anything fattier if it's not necessary? All mixed in with some wholewheat Fusili and a sprinkle of (low fat ) cheese! One of the nice things about cooking and freezing is that the flavours soak in and the food is much tastier. Lunch. Fishcake and Thai Vegetables. This meal planning is making life so much easier...and I'm not saying that because it's my March resolution to plan ahead, but it really is making it easier not to give into cravings! This fishcake is a Cajun Prawn and Sweet Potato one from @waitroseandpartners and the vegetables are from @aldiuk frozen range...they're amazing...5mins in a frying pan and they're so delicious. MEAL PLAN MARCH is underway! That's right...no more rowing, chocolate back on the menu (until Lent on Wednesday ) so it's time for March's resolution. As part of my fitness/weightloss journey and before I'd considered training to become a PT, any time I meal planned I was a lot more "on it" in pretty much every aspect of life. There's something about taking ownership of what you do and then reaping the rewards. Planning meals means you know what's coming, there's less chance of binging if you know in advance what you're having and I'm even going so far as to plan snacks too (and not just sweet ones! ). I also expect that planning ahead will mean a lot less waste and also hoping to save a few pennies...I took an inventory of the fridge, freezer and cupboards so I know what we have in to make planning easier. Monday done. Well that was an effort! After a fabulous family weekend sightseeing in London covering 50km on foot it would have almost been nice today to have just stayed in bed, but no, it's school holiday, the dog still needs walking and the boy needs entertaining and my cough and blocked nose need to be ignored! Would have happily spent a few hours on the sofa tonight, but that's not going to prep new workouts and it's not going to keep me fit! Squeezed in 20min cross-trainer workout and then a really good throw around of the dumbbells before finishing with another 2km on the rower...that takes me to 33km for the month! Some days "I can't really be bothered" springs to mind...it happens to all of us whether we love working out or not. I see a lot of clients who are always rushing around after everyone else and find little time to squeeze in an hour's workout. Sometimes life really does get in the way. That doesn't mean having to forgo exercise though. The majority of workouts I do can be broken down and when short on time it's still possible to get a good enough workout in, even in just 20-30mins. Something is better than nothing. Something will help you get towards your goals a lot sooner than nothing will! I also think on those days when you really don't want to exercise but you force yourself to...they're the ones that give you extra Brownie points! Get up, get moving and feel all the better for it. Tuesday done. Wiped! But in a good way! An early and chilly dog walk woke me up somewhat and then a great day meeting new clients and putting current ones through their paces! Pushing people out of their comfort zone isn't an easy thing to do because nobody wants to be disliked, but when it's to show them they can do more than they realise it's worthwhile...it's more than worthwhile. We can all do more than we give ourselves credit for. As for my workout...well I managed a quick cycle and then to get another 2km in on the rower I had to superset in between and that was hard tonight, but worthwhile. Mindless v Mindful Extra handful of pasta? The bag of sweets instead of a handful? That's where calories add up and if you aren't aware or considering what you're consuming then chances are you're overeating. I track my food 3yrs after losing 5st because if I don't then I slip up, overdo it and the pounds creep on...and that's the thing, they creep on a pound or two here and there and before you know it half a stone, a stone. So if you're starting out trying to lose weight, just notice that a handful less makes a difference, 1 less spoonful of pasta, a mini chocolate bar instead of full size. Saturday done. That feels better. I took the night off last night and felt all the better for it! Refreshed this morning for a blustery walk with the dog and then a morning watching the boy running around playing football...don't envy the coaches training 5yr olds! Tonight hit the gym for a cross-trainer workout and then played with some weights...40kg deadlifts (3 X 6 ) and a standing abs routine with 2 x 8kgs...felt nice and strong. Quite fancied the idea of a swim and/or steam, but with time not on my side I did a 3km stint on the rowing machine instead to get me closer to the 43km I need to do for charity! Thursday done. Such a great day. The human body amazes me, I've seen clients all day today and every single one is noticing differences in themselves as a result of training and improving themselves. Change is change whether it's big or small and the beauty of fitness is that you only have to be competitive with yourself. Work hard, you'll be rewarded. Whether it's shorter recovery time in cardio workouts, to feeling muscles you didn't know you had, to being mindful about what you're consuming; it can be so many things. Wednesday done. After a busy day yesterday I took the night off my own workouts and called it a rest day. Saturday done. I've had another good week and February is off to a very good start! Finally finding the right balance between working and my own workouts, which I never thought I'd have to think about so much. February for me is getting back on it fully, with more intensity to my workouts and giving more than I have been doing...feels better just 2 days in, that may also have something to do with cutting out chocolate for the month as 1 of my resolutions for Feb! Tonight did a good cross-trainer workout and then 25mins with dumbbells and a standing abs routine. Then for my 2nd part of February resolution I rowed 3km. I've signed up to raise money for @cr_uk and their #febrowary challenge, 1 marathon on a month...day 2 and I'm 6km in and feeling confident! Lunch. Poached Eggs on Pikelets with Spinach and Mushrooms I haven't posted food for a while, this was too tasty not to! Ever go from being a child to an adult and just decide that there's food you don't like even if you haven't tried it? That was me for a lot of years and it was only from learning to be fit and healthy that I started to see food as fuel too. A few years ago I'd have howled if someone told me I would choose a lunch like this over a sandwich or sausage roll. Not even (just ) because it's healthy, but it's also deliciously tasty! Sunday done. Another week over, all set for a new one to begin! Usual morning stroll around town first thing and then a blustery day out with family! Tonight hit the gym for a good 2-4-6-8-10 Elliptical workout for 20mins...really feel it in the quads pushing on the 10s! Then to make best use of time had a 25min superset session...I love timesavers and always feel nice and strong afterwards. Even used 14kg dumbbells for bent over rows...a PB and man do I feel that in the abs already. Saturday done. A rest day last night after a busy week so it felt good to get back to it tonight. Started this morning with a nice dog walk and then after a chilled out day hit the gym running...well not running today, but the elliptical for 25mins with a workout I hadn't done in a while! Thursday done. Also all of the other days done since my last post, I've been so busy! My own workout today turned out to be my own HIIT workout and then abs...very enjoyable after a busy day at the office. When I decided to be a PT I had in my mind who I wanted to help and why...those too self-conscious to gym, those starting from scratch, those needing a hand and different approach from someone who knows how hard it has having been there. This week I've had brilliant clients, putting in 100% effort and starting to really see and feel the benefits of leading a healthy and fit lifestyle, making changes that can last forever. Sunday done. Another weekend over and it's been a fab one this weekend, quite sad it's over. Caught up on some zzzzzzz's this morning and it must have given me super-powers because my dog walk was a good one...7.85km in just over an hour...walking...I usually push to get 7km. All in the mind as to what you can do. After a lovely day I hit the gym. I found I'd got myself into one of those phases where you do a workout and it's just enough...you know, it's a workout, it's exercise, it's better than nothing, but not actually pushing myself that bit more. Well no more! I hit the treadmill for a 20min HIIT blast and it felt good....HR right up in peak zone and I sweated/sparkled! I then did a real good standing abs dumbbell workout and was all set to jump in pool, but nope, realised that was sticking to my "that'll do" workout...so I did extra with the dumbbells on the floor. Much more satisfying. Saturday done. Such a busy week I've surprised myself and enjoyed a chilled out day today. Being busy with work is a good thing, but it's taking some getting used to with working in my own workout! Sunday done. Motivation has returned! It's been there for everyone else, just not me, but it's back! Nice dog walk this morning just shy of 7k at a much more respectable pace than of late! Had a lovely time with family trip to Stratford Upon Avon for lunch and a walk. Nice to have a @pretamangeruk to go to seeing as there still isn't one in Leamington! Tonight at the gym had a really good session on my core...15min row (hit 5mins peak HR ) and the rest on the lat pulldown, cable station and briefly the smith machine for barbell squats. Saturday done! Now that was a good day. Caught up on some sleep, had a lovely walk with the dog and then had a chilled day with family and jam donuts! Heaven! Tonight in an empty gym I had a brilliant time and kicked my own butt! Thursday done! I worked my socks off for the delicious bowl of ice cream I've just had after a busy day! Dog walk as usual, once the boy at school I thought I'd get my own workout in as clients all in afternoon/evening today. So I've been enjoying finding old workout DVDs and giving them a go. Nobody can ever know every single way of working out and as a PT there are endless things to keep learning and I find DVDs tools for that learning...so it was an old DVD @davinamccall did a while ago. I did the entire thing... #cardio #legs #arms #core as well as cool down...the watch shows the results...over an hour and 650cals burned...amazing! The rest of the day filled with good food and fabulous clients. It's amazing how rewarding it is to see clients pushing themselves harder than they knew they could all because they want to make positive and healthy changes to themselves.
