This Edmonton course was definitely under estimated and the most challenging that I've faced. With hills, numerous turns, and elevation..pulling a BQ here wouldve been something else! However, I took soo much from this experience and im grateful. This image of the last mile stretch showed me that a human is capable of much more than we know. It opened my mind to the true possibilities of human potential, with that comes a change in your mentality in all aspects of life. The gym is not my social time. I don’t show up to be flashy. I’m not trying to look good for anybody. My ego isn’t wrapped up in how much I lift. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I don’t give AF about any of that. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m there to challenge my body. I’m there to challenge my mind. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My ego is wrapped up in finding my personal limits. In challenging them. In breaking them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m turned off by most gym people because their motives are so superficial. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So I go in. I do my work. I beat myself. For fat loss should you do Cardio? Strength training? Both?🤔 . . People focus so much on which burns more calories but this isn’t even the important part. When you focus solely on calories, you’re still focusing on losing weight vs losing fat. - Calorie/energy balance is about weight loss — not fat loss. - The true benefit to strength training is how it forces your body to DISTRIBUTE that energy. A good lift puts your body into a state where it knows it needs to send nutrients to the muscles. - Think of it this way: - When you lift weights or aim to get stronger while you’re in a calorie deficit — however you create that deficit — you’re essentially telling your body: - “Hey, um, I know you need energy because you’re not getting enough from food, but we’re doing these deadlifts and trying to do chin ups, so you’re gonna have to take fat for energy because I clearly need the muscle.” - Without any fancy words, that is basically what’s happening. Weight training and protein signals to your body the muscle has to stay. Your body isn’t dumb, it does what it needs to do to support your body’s environment and needs. - But if all you do is cardio your body will eventually decide that muscle can go along with the fat. - And if that happens, you aren’t getting leaner — just smaller. - And that’s not what you signed up for right? - So no, I don’t have a problem with cardio. I just have science and a simple way to explain that cardio alone isn’t gonna help get you get lean. - By all means, you can do just cardio and lose fat — but eventually it’ll come with losing muscle. And if you just like cardio? 🤯THE WAY YOU STUDY SUCKS!!🤯 • Wake Up!!! You've been taught wrong. We all have been taught wrong. Major researchers in psychology & cognition, Dr. Henry Roediger III and Dr. Mark McDaniel have conducted research proving the methods we were taught as children simply don't work when it comes to mastery of material and commiting it to long-term memory. • Underlining & Highlighting does very little to improve learning. It may help you focus and mark important concepts to revisit later, but alone, does not aid in the retention of the content studied. • ReReading is the Worst!! 80% of college students do this!!!! It carries with it 3 strikes! (1 ) -- Time Consuming! (2 ) -- Doesn't result in durable memory (doesn't stick! ) (3 ) -- Involves an unwitting self-deception. It grows your familiarity of the content but not mastery (hence why you forget it right after you take the exam.. ) • The truth is you can commit something to memory by simply repeating it over and over. • And memorizing without context or a specific goal of how to use what you're memorize is pointless. It's like gathering the materials to build a house, but you don't come back to build the house. You must use what you memorize in a deeper context, create a story, apply to concepts you already know. • BUT WHAT DOES WORK?!!! • Research has shown that the following 3 methods work MUCH BETTER in helping you master and learn the material! (1 ) Put what you're studying into your own words! (2 ) Teach it to somebody else as if you were teaching young children to understand (forces you to critically think ) (3 ) Recall the information!! Test yourself!
