The Washington County Historical Society acquired the Ridge House in the early 1970s after it was threatened with destruction and its history came to light. ⁣ It’s the oldest known structure in Fayetteville, the original portion ⁣ dating to 1836. It started as a two-pen log dogtrot house. Later, a second floor was added and the exterior was covered in clapboard, giving it a New England saltbox look.⁣ Sarah Bird Northrup Ridge bought the ⁣ house in 1840 after her husband was killed in the Cherokee Nation. Among her seven children, son John Rollin Ridge is best known as the first Native ⁣ American to publish a novel.⁣ (Info provided by Washington County Historical Society. ) #FayettevilleHistory #washingtoncountyarkansas #architecturalhistory #

One of Franz Hart’s most impressive projects is located at Salvatorplatz in Munich, vis-a-vis the Salvator Church: the office building and parking garage (1964 ) of the former Bavarian State Bank that not only adjusts to the church’s architecture but also integrates the leftover pieces of Munich’s old city wall. I love the turret on this Bridgeport two-flat. It adds character to the facade but isn’t too large and ostentatious that it changes the building’s look.

1/3 Sunshine and no power cuts this time - We made it into Charleston! Home of artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, this extraordinary farmhouse became the Sussex home of the Bloomsbury Group. Guests included author (and sister of Vanessa ) Virginia Woolf, art critic Clive Bell, economist John Keynes, author T S Eliot, author E M Forster and many more. The house became Vanessa and Duncan’s lifelong project, with each room enriched with expressive decoration, patterns, murals and possessions. The bold interiors were ahead of their time, with geometric architectural motifs and abstractions, which could be attributed to the fifties. Due to copyright we can’t show you the inside here, but we can encourage you to visit! Park Ave (1865 ) - this stately beauty on Park is one of the oldest standing homes in town. the previous iteration of the Historic Flemington Walking Tour stopped here, but I can not speak on the new version just yet. I'll definitely be going on a tour one of these days and I'll be sure to pass along some of the juicier bits 🍵 uncropped version in my story

An older sketch of a beautiful and under appreciated building in Pisa. This, like the Cathedral is a proper Romanesque building in the same Pisano style. It’s called San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno and was at one point one of the most important churches in Pisa. When I saw it a few years ago it wasn’t in use anymore. I hope they preserve this building eventually. It’s Importance to the building history of Pisa and Tuscany is enormous.—— Questo disegno l’ho fatto un paio d’anni fa, di questa bella e tristemente molto sotto apprezzata chiesa a Pisa. Fu disegnata in un stilo è allo stesso tempo più meno del Duomo Pisano. Quando l’ha trovato non se usava la chiesa più. L’importanza alla storia architettonica della città di Pisa ed alla regione della Toscana è enorme. #romanesque #pisano #posa #facade #chiesa #sketch #disegno #documenting #architecturalhistory #italianhistory #travelsketchbook #cataloguing #architetturaromanica #romanico #romanicopisano #italia #conservazionedelpatrimonioartistico #storiadellarte

Broad St (1890 ) - I find it fairly typical that I will begin to see familiar things in new ways as a season changes. I noticed a bunch of new houses this weekend that I had yet to open my eyes to. I wish I could have these tidal shifts in awareness more often but every few months is probably often enough as it is.

The Post-Office (Chicago ) by Vernon Howe Bailey. Published as part of “The City of Chicago: Drawings in Pencil” in Everybody’s magazine, February 1908 Original caption: The Chicago Post-office stands in the southern part of the iron square formed by the four sides of the elevated railway “Loop.” This “Loop,” engirdling with its perpetual trains an area of less than three-quarters of a square mile, contains practically all of the Chicago "down-town" district. The Post-office Building, designed by Henry Ives Cobb, is the only building that covers the whole of one of the thirty-five square blocks that comprise the “Loop” area. This building, which also functioned as a federal office and court building, was demolished in the mid 1960s and replaced by the Chicago Federal Center complex designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. . . . . #Chicago #Illinois #PostOffice #ChicagoArchitecture #ChicagoOldPostOffice #DemolishedBuilding #LostBuilding #HenryIvesCobb #Everybodys #EverybodysMagazine #OldChicagoPostOffice #BeauxArts #BeauxArtsArchitecture #BeauxArtsStyle #ArchitecturalHistory #1908 #1905 #VernonHoweBailey #sketch #drawing #PencilDrawing #ChicagoHistory #ChicagoArt #TheLoop #DowntownChicago
