When the world seems to be falling apart, we look to those who are bringing us back together. At 16 years old, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is making waves as she faces climate change head on. Initiating the School Strike for Climate, the movement spread globally after Greta shook the world with her speech at the United Nations Climate Change Conference last December in which she expressed the severity of the world’s climate change crisis to the summit. Since then It’s estimated that 1.4 million students from countries all around the world have joined Greta in striking for climate. The youth of today are inspiring the generations that came before. Those generations that now have the power to make the political and economic choices that will determine the fate of our planet. It’s youth leaders like Greta who are turning the tide that we need to support and uplift. Joining together with our own voice, amplifying the call for climate action. 📷 by @campanellafoto #TheShift #TheRemedy #TheResistance #turningtogether #TurningtheTide #pnw #lovethecoast #BritishColumbia #conservation #Vancouverisland #keepitintheground #protectourcoast #YouthforClimate #YouthStrike4Climate

Repost @shawnheinrichs ・・・ EVOLUTIONARY PERFECTION - sharks have ruled our oceans for over 400 million years, maintaining a delicate balance that has ensured the health of our oceans. No other animals are so uniquely and perfectly evolved as sharks to perform this critical function. Humans in our current form have been on Earth for about a hundred thousand years, and yet in less than 50 years of industrial fishing, we have annileated many shark populations by as much as 90 to 99%. Time is running out for sharks, and if we do not act soon, many species will face imminent Extinction. Will we standby with indifference and apathy? Are we okay with threatening to destabilize the foundation of our oceans' ecosystems? Are we unable see beyond our immediate needs and immediate greed? A sea lion, peppered with white sand, naps in the summer sun on a beach in the Galapagos. From a recent @SeaLegacy expedition. Climate change myth # 2 is a favorite among climate change deniers and revolves around the idea that climate change is just a part of the Earth's natural cycle. While it is true that the Earth has experienced periods of extreme and changing weather in the past, the warming occurring on earth right now defies current understanding of earth's natural climate cycles. For the past few decades the Earth has been absorbing less energy from the sun, not more - Earth should be getting colder, not warmer. Today there are 7.7 billion people on earth. Think about that number for a second. That's more people than there are different species of plants and animals. 7.7 billion people eating and driving cars and otherwise consuming, and all around us the world is burning up. @PaulNicklen and I have dedicated our life's work to saving our oceans, and sharing our experiences every chance we can because we believe that the best thing for our Earth is, simply, to take care of it.

Photograph by @paulnicklen // A baby harp seal, just days old, patiently waits for its mom to return from the sea to provide life sustaining milk. Milk that is comprised of up to 50% fat. The math is simple, on cold years, sea ice reaches its maximum extent and there is maximum recruitment into the population and on warmer years, which has been the norm as of late, there can be zero recruitment into the population. The incredible thing is that we can control the fate of this species by regulating the carbon we release into the atmosphere. #followme on @paulnicklen and see how we are #turningthetide with @sea_legacy #seal #bethechange #gratitude #love #beauty #cute #instagood #picoftheday _____________________ 🔥🌴 Want to Make a Full Time, Automated Income? Polar bears are the only species of bears considered to be marine mammals. Well adapted to life in the frigid waters’ of the Arctic, with slightly webbed paws, and streamlined bodies. The largest distance swimming, recorded by scientist, showed a female bear traversing 426mile(687km ) in the Beaufort sea where lost of sea ice is retreating from the coast by the hundreds of kms. In the evolutionary history of bears, these oceans have seldom given way to so much ocean. Though adult bears appear to be very capable swimmers, lasting up to 10 days expending energy swimming, it’s questionable how cubs fair. Without a doubt we are trending for more open ocean, smaller ice extents, and therefore longer commutes for bears in the water. Scientists are currently studying if cub mortality is linked to this, if mortality is from drowning, or if the metabolically taxing activity of swimming long distances is killing them as they reach land. In previous studies only 43% of polar bear cubs survive their first year. Full disclosure this study was done on the Beaufort sea population, and in 2005. Every population of polar bears is unique and though some challenges maybe similar, it’s irresponsible to assume its straight across the board. Regardless, scientists are watching cub mortality rates carefully as this is a key indicator that can threaten overall bear populations. #baffinisland , #nunavut , #canada 05/2019.⁣ .⁣ .⁣ . ⁣ #arcticocean #earthfocus #shotsofanimals #imagesofcanada #earthofficial #bbcearth #awesome_earthpix #arcticcircle #sharecangeo #artoftheshutter38 #greenland #explorecanada #polarbear #svalbard #cnntravel #wildlifeconservation #polarbears #ourplanetdaily #nature #turningthetide #climatechange #globalwarming #旅行 #景色 #自然 #natgeo @travelnunavut @polarbearsinternational @canadagoose @baffin safari

It is a phenomenon for the senses, to be in the presence of the ocean.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ It is a reason for us to protect it and honor it both in our travels and our daily lives. Think about your daily practices and how they affect the big picture. Reduce and eliminate single use plastic. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Some of our tips to help you do this include:⠀⠀ Decline straws and plastic cup tops. I promise, you will be able to drink without them.⠀⠀ Carry stainless steel straws with you that can be washed and used again if you can't live without a straw.⠀⠀ Always bring a water bottle to refill.⠀⠀ Put a set of reusable cutlery in your bag and decline plastic spoons, forks and knives. ⠀⠀ Bring reusable fabric bags when you go shopping. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ It might not seem like much, but every little bit counts. #TurningtheTide #savetheplanet #reducereuserecycle #savetheocean #discoverocean #plasticfreeoceans #plasticfreeforthesea #oceancleanup ⠀⠀

✨NEWSFLASH ✨ #Trump told @POLITICO there are bigger problems than #plastic straws. We agree. It’s the 8-12 MILLION TONNES of plastic dumped in #ourocean annually. That #plasticpollution includes #singleuse plastic straws, "plates, wrappers & everything else." So why focus on plastic straws? While plastic straws are necessary for some of our allies in the disability community (visit strawlessocean.org to learn more ), for many, they are an unnecessary #singleuse plastic item for which we have ocean-friendly alternatives. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Join us in helping champion accessibility for those that do require a plastic straw to drink AND help debunk #fakenews by asking @realDonaldTrump to #stopsucking and start acting on #plasticpollution , not adding to it with #Trump branded single-use plastic trash. Mondays are for the Birds and this Monday's Bird is the Crimson-collared Tanager (Ramphocelus sanguinolentus )! This Tanager ranges from southern Veracruz and northern Oaxaca in Mexico through the Atlantic slope of Central America, to the highlands of western Panama. It inhabits the edges of humid evergreen forests and second growth. The Crimoson-collared Tanager's nest is a cup built of such materials as moss, rootlets and strips of large leaves such as banana or Heliconia, and is placed at middle height in a tree at a forest edge. The female usually lays two eggs, pale blue with blackish spots. I took this photo in Costa Rica in 2013. We were eating breakfast at our lodge and there were beautiful birds in the trees all around us enjoying the cool morning before the heat and humidity of mid-day hit. This Crimson-collared Tanager was eyeing us from a nearby tree when I grabbed this frame.
