Curved facades help make 707 Fifth – Manulife Place a distinct yet connected addition to downtown Calgary. The slender, elliptical shape of the 27-story office tower opens it to the city, creating new public plazas on the north and east sides and linking with a Calgary light rail transit station at street level. The Godrej BKC complex provides more than just state-of-the-art office space—it enriches the cityscape in Mumbai’s financial district. A series of inviting public spaces, including arcades, elevated terraces, and open-air plazas, surround the building, which we designed together with @gpldesignstudio In the front plaza, a large sculpture by @subodhguptastudio continues a long tradition of incorporating public art into our projects. When it was built in the 1960s, @thisisuic became the first public university in Chicago. The campus design—a striking ensemble of angular buildings in concrete, brick, and granite, connected by elevated walkways—stemmed from the vision of architect Walter Netsch. The Behavioral Sciences Building, shown here, illustrates Netsch’s distinctive approach and a system he established known as field theory—a versatile, geometric process for generating structures in which the combination of right angle (orthogonal ) and angular (diagonal ) patterns drive the design. At G-Cubed, a new glass-enclosed gym and rooftop garden atop an office complex in Century City, visitors find flexible open space for social and business gatherings. To accommodate the weight of the pavilion, which sits above a seven-story parking garage, our integrated architecture and engineering team retrofitted the existing structure. Sliding glass doors provide natural ventilation with the mild Southern California climate, and two large overhangs shade outdoor seating and lounge areas that offer sweeping views of the city. In the Fort Bonifacio Business District of the Philippines, the detailed facade system of ArthaLand Century Pacific Tower does more than catch the eye; the design—a series of overlapping glass panels running the 136-meter height of the office tower—provides optimal solar control, allowing for additional shading to the south and west. Coupled with other sustainable features, the facade helped the building earn LEED Platinum status and a 5-star rating from BERDE (a green building rating system in the Philippines ). Twenty years ago, the Jin Mao Tower (center ) opened its doors and became the tallest building in China. With a form inspired by traditional Chinese pagodas and a distinctive rhythmic pattern created by a series of setbacks, it has since become one of the country's most iconic and a model for high-rise design around the world. Now the third-tallest building in Shanghai, Jin Mao reveals many design features that reflect the auspicious number eight, from its octagon-shaped core to its 88 floors. A grid of 48 skylights, each six feet in diameter, illuminates the atrium of 777 Aviation. Originally designed in 1968 for a single, corporate occupant, the building was recently transformed into a contemporary, creative workplace for multiple tenants. To provide a gathering place within the building, the atrium was doubled in size to 4,600 square feet. A grand stair and other areas provide seating and meeting spaces, while surrounding balconies accommodate amenities like conference rooms. In downtown Calgary, 707 Fifth – Manulife Place reveals a design ready to stand up to the demands of the Canadian prairie climate—one characterized by cold and harsh winters tempered by warm Chinook winds and an above-average number of sunny days per year. Two curved convex facades meet to form a concave surface along the building’s narrow eastern and western edges, resulting in an aerodynamic form that mitigates street-level wind. There’s just about one more week until New York City public schools open, and it’s reading, writing, and relics that await the students of P.S. 315. Built on the site of a former Tiffany glass factory in Corona, Queens, the school gives a nod to the site’s artistic and industrial past in the lobby, where an art installation by Rita McBride—composed of hundreds of colored glass pieces found during excavation of the land prior to the school’s construction—will greet students. This sectional model offers a glimpse of the structure of the Cadet Chapel at the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA ) in Colorado. The chapel, designed by Walter Netsch and completed in 1963, was the culminating architectural element of SOM’s master plan and design of the whole USAFA campus. With its powerful geometry, the building established the academy’s reputation as a masterwork of Modernist architecture. The building features a succession of 17 glass and aluminum spires (three of which are included in this model ), with each composed of 100 tetrahedrons. #Architecture #Design #ColoradoSprings #ArchModelMonday

What’s old is new again at the West Loop branch of the @chicagopubliclibrary The first branch in its neighborhood, the library offers a contemporary cultural and social center for West Loop residents while preserving a piece of the neighborhood’s architectural heritage. Across two existing conjoined buildings, formerly part of the Harpo Studios campus, a weathered steel exterior unifies the facade and leads to a steel-framed entrance. Inside, visitors find a loft-like space that reflects the local factory-warehouse style. Photo © @tomharrisphotography #Architecture #Design #Chicago #Library #AdaptiveReuse

Beyond the frame of this photo, shot by @tiffany_liem , 35 Hudson Yards rises to a height of 1,000 feet. The mixed-use tower, home to the newly opened @equinox hotel, is the tallest residential building in Hudson Yards—a 28-acre development built over active railroad tracks and tunnels on Manhattan’s West Side. But what within the tower allows it to stand so tall? For its latest issue of “Civil Engineering,” the American Society of Civil Engineers sat down with SOM’s Charles Besjak and other practitioners to talk about the engineering behind today’s “giants of slender geometry.” Read the story at the link in our profile. #Architecture #Design #NewYorkCity #Skyscraper #Regram
