I mostly fish for salmonids because they grow big, they become strong, they’re incredibly beautiful and most of the time, very hard to catch - they are my absolute favourites. However, every once in a while the off-season in Finland just gets way too long and any kind of flyfishing feels better than just waiting. This spring was both busy and long and I fished more non-salmonids than ever before. Hence, I caught, inter alia, my first zander, perch and Sabah mahseer on the fly😄🐠 #borneo #sabah #mahseer #pelian #jungleflyfishing #dryordie #catchandrelease #altawindjacket #fromarctictotropics #guideline

First salmons have already entered Baltic rivers and season kicks in any moment now and I’m so not ready😄 Been so busy with work the last months, I haven’t had time to order any new gear for the season nor fix my broken car, I’ve lost ALL my salmon flies without managing to find them😭😭😭 and I have no clue yet when or where I’m gonna be fishing this summer - in other words, I couldn’t be less prepared😄 However, I trust things will fall in place in the coming weeks and soon I’ll be swinging flies and chasing the Baltic dream with my friends in the North🌲🎣🙏 Are you ready for the season?🔥 @mattiasrback #gameofsalmons #balticdreams #laxfiske #lainio #intesovabarafiska #swedishlapland

Greenland is the definition of remote. This means access to rivers requires hours of travelling by plane and by boat, which of course, in the end, is worth all the travelling. Once you reach your destination, the only living beings beside you are the Arctic chars, reindeers and eagles🎣🦌🦅 @henhells #wheretheriversrunfree #arcticnature #wildernessvibes #pristinewaters #sightfishing #flyfishingparadise #kangiariverlodge #greenland

I once debated with a friend about what makes you develop as a fly fisher. I persistently contended that hard conditions make you step out of your comfort zone, think different, try new things and push you further, developing you in your attempt to crack the code. My friend insisted it was the opposite. He said hard conditions don’t teach you shit, but rather it is the good conditions which allow you to develop as a fly-fisher as being frequently in contact with the fish allows you to actually observe the behavior of the fish and see what works. After a lousy salmon season in Scandinavia, followed by insane autumn fishing in Greenland, I have to admit my friend was right: Whereas lousy salmon season only taught me how to overcome bitterness time after time and the true value of friends in hardship, one week surrounded by thousands of chars gave me countless opportunities to research their behaviour and see which things are connected as well as get better at fighting, handling and releasing a fish☝️✨ @henhells #fjeldørred #eqaluk #handlewithcare #letemgosotheycanspawn #fluefiske #pristinewaters #kangiariverlodge #greenland #guidelineflyfish

To me, like for many other of today’s fly-fishers, fly-fishing at its best includes turning off your phone and laptop and changing city lights to northern lights – a wilderness experience that has become a luxury for most of the people. Being bound to the metropolitan life most of the time, I never understood urban fly-fishing. To the contrary, for me the wilderness experience has always been an essential part of fly-fishing: I want to let go of all the hustle and bustle, disconnect from the inane city life and connect with nature, and myself. The experience is liberating and empowering✨ @solidadventures #welcometowilderness #kangiariver #charparadise #fluefiske #lifeinthearctic #kalaallitnunaat #grønland

”As I release all the salmonids I catch on a fly, I do not care about the taste. And even though it’s a commonly known fact that the fresh chromers are even tougher fighters, my heart still pounds in a different way when I see a coloured one. Spending the last week of the season in Kangia, most of the fish had already been in the river for a while and lost some of their sea strength but gained in colours instead. This meant that the river was just a flood of rioting colours, of thousand shades of orange and green.”🍊🦖You can now read Thousand Shades of Orange and Green, my story about Kangia, in Guideline’s blog, link in bio. Never in my life would I have believed that I would spend hundreds of hours staring at rocks but as crazy it sounds, that’s actually what I mostly do in summer😄 I mean catching salmon requires so much more than just stepping into the river, casting and waiting. It is countless hours of scrolling satellite maps, following water flow and temperature like a religion, driving to dozens of places and then finally when you find a good-looking spot, it’s about reading the river and yes, spotting rocks - big or small, on surface or under water, visible or unvisible - that will indicate you the location of salmons👀🗺🌦🤫 #staringatrocks #welcometomylife #salmonfishing #summertimemadness #nightlessnight #guideline

Reflecting the year that has passed, a year that didn’t lack challenges but was no less full of adventures than 2017. Fishingwise, the year was a dream come true. I fished over 100 days and spent a lot of time by the water. The summer was all about living your dreams: I slept in the car by the river, partied at Kangos Laxfestival in the heat, then drove all the way to the Arctic Ocean to find salmon rivers cool enough to fish in and caught a Baltic salmon of my dreams in Kengis. I also fished with my dear sister @karokoljonen , made friends with yet another cool female flyfisher @regineemilie and finished the year with some sick fishing in Greenland. I teamed up with @guidelineflyfish and thanks to that, met a lot of inspiring people like @emilwestrin I also joined the @arctic_waters crew, did my first TV appearance and was priviledged to fish incredible places such as the amazing trout waters of Ammarnäs. The challenges I faced during the year were, like very often, not fishing related. I drove myself close to exhaustion working with things that I experience so important. It broke my heart to see the bad condition of the Baltic salmon stocks continue and indifference around it. Working at the Ministry wasn’t easy all the time and I’m so grateful to my few colleagues who stood with me the whole year. The work is not done and I am not done, my work for abundant Baltic salmon stocks has only begun. Fortunately also good things happened in the fishing regulation world: a long-awaited law amendment that strengthens the protection of endangered fish species against illegal fishing and returns fishing rights to the locals in the North took significant steps forward. I also got to work with both my mum and dad - I feel proud of their work and happy to follow in their footsteps. One thing is certain: There’s no better time to make your dreams come true than this moment. Thus 2019 I promise to live for myself and so should everyone. Have a beautiful holiday season & may all your dreams come true🌈🙏✨ #realisingthepowerofnow

When the fishing conditions suck big time, like in Kangos Laxfestival this summer, and let’s face it, in Finland, Sweden and Norway most of the salmon season this year, having fishing friends who always stay in a good mood and make you laugh comes to an even bigger importance. In this photo, I’m desperately trying to catch a salmon in in 23 degrees warm Lainio to win the competition as my friends @isaksandling and @simonrantapaa are keeping up the good spirit. The competition was of course a disaster and only one salmon was landed during that night. The lousy fishing was however quickly washed away from our minds with sauna, swimming, games and partying. Thank you guys for keeping up the good vibes despite shitty fishing and the best party this summer🎣💃🍻 @mattiasrback #kangoslaxfestival #fisheatpartyrepeat #laxfiske #fishingwithfriends #flyfishingvibes #lainioälven

We all have our own style to fish. I, for my part, wade like a moose when in the river but can drop slow like a snail when I fish - at least if you ask my friends😄🐌 #wadeforit #balticdreams #laxfiske #nothinggoodcomeseasy #flyfishing #leadinmyboots #womeninwaders #guidelineflyfish #northernsweden

Salmon fishing before the global heatwave made salmon fishing, catch and release fishing in particular, impossible in many of the salmon rivers in Finland, Sweden and Norway. Roses are red. Violets are blue. And salmon fishing is the most fucked up fishing you’ll ever do.😄 But yet it’s the best thing you can do.🙃 The first two weeks of the salmon season are now behind and I’m still waiting to land the first of the season. It has once again without doubt been the best and the most consuming two weeks of the year. On the one hand, it’s been a fucking struggle with extremely low water conditions everywhere in the Baltic rivers but on the other hand it’s been so much fun to see all the salmon fisher friends after the long winter and explore new places and chase silver with them. The game is not over, it has only begun🎣🙏 #salmonfever #struggleisreal #chasingbalticdream #biggerthanlife #salmonfishing #laxfiske #guideline
