A variety of factors are at play when it comes to the last phase of labor and how different it can look for different people: energy reserves, length of labor, position of baby, collaboration of support team, preparation for birth, medical intervention that may arise, fears, personality, history... the list goes on. Families should have the opportunity to explore their options, and bring to the table all the things/people/mindsets that are most aligned with their vision. Did you eat during labor? Thanks for this post @mamanurturebirth ・・・ It’s not uncommon to lose your appetite as labor progresses. But who says you can’t eat in labor? Not midwives, and not the OB she chose to support her. If you want to, nourish yourself for the work ahead. Maternal exhaustion is real cause for needing medical intervention. 🥣🍵🍲 Even anesthesiologists agree that most women would benefit from a light meal in labor. Link in comments. April is Cesarean Awareness Month - the month that my Instagram feed is filled with images of c-sections from all of the birth workers and birth related pages I follow. ⁣ ⁣ Rather than normalize and celebrate images of surgical birth, during the month of April I want to share real women's own words about their experience of having a c-section. ⁣ ⁣ Approximately 1/3 of women in the US who birth in a hospital will have a primary c-section. It is known worldwide that our global c-section rate is far higher than it should be. The majority of c-sections are preventable and unnecessary, and many of them are coerced by providers. ⁣ ⁣ This is where you come in: would anyone here who has had a c-section like to share your story on our IG page? (If you are not following us yet we are @healingbirth ! )⁣ ⁣ Your identity will be kept private. @birthingconfident shares: ・・・ When I am asked what the top three things a woman can do to prepare for a positive birth experience, I say... 1. ) POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS. I won’t go into this today, but you can see some examples in my story highlights. 2. ) BREATHING. And 3. ) POSITIONS. Once again I won’t go into this today, but you can see some in my story highlights!* * BREATHING. Something we do everyday without really thinking about it, and yet, SO crucial to know how to do during labor. Breathing helps you remain calm, feel in control, alleviate discomfort or pain, and clears your mind.* * Start every contraction with a CLEANSING breath. This is a breath where you breathe in to the count of 5 (1...2...3...4...5 ) and then exhale immediately, envisioning your body emptying out all your air.* * Then you can start a relaxing breath. Start by relaxing every muscle in your face and closing your eyes. This is inhaling to the count of 8 or 10 (1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8...9..10 ) And then slowly exhale through you lips, not nose, to 8 or 10. I know, I know, if you are not accustomed to this practice, and your baby is getting bigger and bigger, it may seem impossible to go 8 or 10 seconds. BUT!! With practice, you will be surprised how you really can do it!!* * It is CRUCIAL to inhale and exhale the SAME amount of time for the relaxing breath. This is to be used during early labor and contractions. Practice this technique in a calm space where you can mentally and physically relax to prepare to do it during contractions. This video is me doing this breath during a major contraction.* * Now for the PUSHING breath. This is when you are dilated to a 10 and you feel the urge to push. I am not a believer in ‘lie on your back, legs to your arm pits, and hold your breath for 10 seconds.’ First of all, your baby is getting oxygen and blood supply from YOU. So if you are holding your breath, where is the baby getting oxygen? This breathing will help you push effectively AND ensure baby is getting oxygen. I call this BLOW THE CANDLES OUT.* * Breathe in to the count of 5 (1...2...3...4...5 ) and then harshly blow out of your lips 5-8 times. Your last blow,

That’s the best piece of advice I’ve given expecting families about birth, but also postpartum. Each one is different- not just between people but with the same mama. So many families think they can skip postpartum support because they’ve had babies before, but it honestly means you could use the help even more. • I had the full induction package at 38 weeks with my daughter then a frantic and fast natural birth with my son and the postpartum healing was actually tougher on me the second time. I was older and had to adjust emotionally to two kiddos, but I also had hot and cold flashes and so many other symptoms I didn’t know were a thing! That birth led me to my calling of birth work. • Now with my third, I’ve been having a whole lot of early false labor for weeks. I came in for an induction that would hopefully be a mix of mini intervention and otherwise natural progression and laboring but my contractions were too active for them to do anything 🤣. So we waited, hoping I’d progress on my own ... until discovering my cervix was in no way ready. I came in prepared and calm- happy I could set up my hypnobabies signs, lavender oil and tens unit this time around. My hair was done, pretty pusher and lipsense on, affirmation signs up. My birth doula was present for comfort measures (my doula and photographer missed my last birth ), I had my yoga mat, stability ball and all the warm/cold packs I might need in my labeled Labor Bag. But it wasn’t time. • Now I’m a hot mess. I’m tired. I miss my still nursing and co-sleeping tornado of a 2-year-old who was driving me bonkers before I came in and I’m just all over the place emotionally. I want to hold my toddler because I’m worried about him, or maybe for my own comfort and peace. I’m retreating to my bubble of peace and trying to throw aside the fear of not coping once things finally start after all this waiting. To remind myself that this is just different and that postpartum will be too, but we’ll get through it.

Since I was induced - and the process would be very long and messy - I wore the Butterfly Sleeve labor gown during my recovery at the hospital, and I loved it. It was the perfect thing to wear to receive guests at the hospital and as I struggled with those first days of breast-feeding. It also allowed easy access for the doctors and nurses to poke and prod me during their check- ups and to draw blood and to check my vitals.
