Deadlines are looming while I unbend paperclips at my desk. And every mug in the house is set nearby, as though I've called them to me and they're in the process of harrumphing over. So it feels like the moment to plan a holiday in September. I'm imagining somewhere outdoorsy in Britain, maybe Dartmoor, and that we'll rent a cottage rather than look for a hotel, so it's really just a question of where. I have my map out. Any ideas? (The above was three summers ago in Scotland, @skibocastle )

The Coach House at Stewart Hall is incredibly beautiful, on the island of Bute off the west coast of Scotland. The original owner in the 1760s was meant to have partly inspired ‘Kidnapped’, and Mount Stuart is nearby. A most special corner of the world!

What a lovely plan. Outer Hebrides are relentlessly beautiful and there are quite a few eco coastal cottages for rent. You can fly to Barra or take a ferry with car from Oban. Highly recommended! If you go, make sure to take a boat trip to the mysterious island of St Kilda.

Mortenhampstead is a lovely little village on Dartmoor, we stayed one Christmas in a tiny village close-by called Doccombe - Great Doccombe Farm Cottage. Very quaint, quiet & picturesque. Highly recommend.

We actually went to Skibo with our (then ) 10 month old after reading your charming article. You must go back with baby, it’s possibly more lovely with kids 💙

I love your The Provincial Lady-esque descriptions of life at your desk, Jo. Dartmoor is lovely and I’m sure you could find a gorgeous cottage from which to watch the heather fade and the bracken begin to turn to gold ...
