Recently I joined @sealegacy and @bluespherefoundation for an expedition to Galapagos. Diving at the iconic Darwin Island, unquestionably one of the most biodiverse and fascinating ecosystems on this planet, one could only imagine how the rest of the world’s oceans looked before the negative human impact. After navigating the challenging currents and finding safe shelter on the reef I became a quiet observer. At times it was quite impossible to decide where to aim my camera. Focusing my attention to silhouettes of schooling hammerheads at the surface a massive pregnant female whale shark with an oceanic blacktip shark escort emerged from the deep blue right in front of me just to be followed by a close inspection by this curious yet shy Hammered❤️ 🤯 Hammerheads are protected and thriving in Galapagos, unfortunately they fall victim to illegal shark fishing operations outside the protected areas being captured by thousands during their migration. Do you have idea how to stop the ridiculous demand for shark fins ? Let’s talk ! #hammerheadshark #stoppoaching #stopsharkfinning #sharks #galapagos #darwinisland #bluespherefoundation #sealegacy Thanks for the close up @hecsaquatic @shawnheinrichs @cristinamittermeier @paulnicklen @kyle roepke @luksth

For many of us Hawaiian Islands are on top of the list as a dream vacation destination. Beautiful beaches, incredible landscapes, diverse wildlife. Hawaii is home to treasures unlike any other on earth. What if you found out that Hawaii was a ground zero for chemical companies to experiment with genetically modified organisms (GMO’s ) testing how many pesticides they could withstand, as they sprayed chemicals on them 250-300 days a year near schools, hospitals and shorelines with zero considerations of the impact on environment and human health? Surrounded by hundreds of gentle stingless jellyfish, carefully floating being aware of my every move as one inconsiderate kick could kill several of these magical beings . These sun worshipping jellies make daily migration to follow the sun, congregating tightly in the sun filled parts of the lake. Unfortunately fragile ecosystems of marine lakes are highly susceptible to effects of climate change and increasingly negatively impacted by irresponsible tourism :( Always try to be respectful visitors anywhere you go!! @bluespherefoundation @shawnheinrichs #jellyfishlake

#Repost @shawnheinrichs ・・・ WHAT HAVE WE DONE - recently while filming over dozen manta rays, peacefully cleaning on a seamount just off Nusa Penida Bali, my heart was filled with such joy and gratitude for these magnificent beings sharing their gentle space with us. My joy turned to horror as we were suddenly engulfed in a tide of plastics stretching from the surface to the seafloor, engulfing the seamount and mantas in an unimaginable amount of plastic waste. Plastic bags were literally wrapping around the faces and cephalic lobes of the mantas as hovered over the cleaning station, and we even watched in distress as plastic floated into their wide open mouths. Almost paralyzed with the distress and shame, these words kept echoing in my mind "what have we done?!!" Humans insatiable desire to consume, coupled with our reckless and unchecked use of single-use plastics that package the "goods" that feed our consumption illness, is literally filling our oceans to the brink with garbage. It breaks my heart to see what we are doing to these gentle and innocent beings who have nowhere else to go and must suffer the consequences of our thoughtless actions. And yet, they keep showing up, without judgment and with complete forgiveness, sending us message that there's still time and that they are there for us, waiting for the change that is critically needed to put a stop to this madness and ensure their survival. The power is within each of our hands to turn things around, and each and every one of us is making decisions every day regarding the use of plastics in our daily lives. Will we hear their message and ACT before it is too late? 🦋🌊💙🌎🌈 #podsquad #stopsucking #strawlessocean #turningthetide #cleanseas @lonelywhale @bluespherefoundation @sealegacy @indonesianoceanpride

Dakuwaqa🦈, the shark god lived long ago in the seas of Fiji , he was the most ferocious of all gods that protected the reef and the ocean. He was/is a shape shifter and has the ability to morph into anything even human beings. According to the ancient Fijian legend Dakuwaqa provided protection for the people at sea. It's now our responsibility to return the favor and protect the sharks. World shark population is experiencing significant decline with more than 100 million sharks being lost every year ! Sharks are endangered as a direct result of human impact ! Habitat degradation Climate change The ridiculous demand for shark fins 🤯 Sharks play important role in managing healthy ocean ecosystems full of diversity and life !!! #stopsharkfinning #stopsharkfinsoup #respectsharks #worthmorealive @vatuvarafoundationfiji

Bull and Lemon shark teeth , souvenirs from our latest shark dive in Fiji .Bull shark has around 50 rows of teeth in it's jaw , 7 teeth in each row makes for grand total of 350 teeth in it's mouth 🤯 Shark teeth don't have roots so they often fall out easily while the shark is feeding, but no worries they grow right back : ) #sharkteeth

Unfortunately at present human kind is far away from coming together to protect what is most important! 7 billion people , 7 billion unique lives , priorities ands agendas. Our overexploitation of natural resources led to all major issues that are threatening life on this beautiful blue planet. Climate Change Loss of biodiversity Over-fishing Oceanic dead zones Deforestation Sometimes I feel overwhelmed and suffer form "ecoanxiety" unwilling to accept that not long from now the world of today will be just a distant memory. Unfortunately ignoring the bad news to the point of hiding out under the covers is not a solution. There is still plenty to do and so much to fight for ! My actions and my voice matter! So does yours !!!! Be the change you wish to see in the world! @projectdrawdown @vatuvarafoundationfiji @sealegacy @bluespherefoundation

From the very first encounter with #porcupineray I always thought of them as an eeire ghost creatures of the ocean. They fast became my favorite the more I learned about their gentle nature. Uniquely within their family they lack venomous stinging spine. Unfortunately even gentle #porcupinerays fall victim to human vanity as their skin is being used in high valued fashion items. #fiji #porcupineray @vatuvarafoundationfiji @vatuvaraprivateislandsfiji

In case you wondered how much plastic does it take to kill a sea turtle ? ONE PIECE!!! Unfortunately eating plastic is not the only problem that turtles have to face... Fishing lines, discarded fishing gear, six pack rings, strings, ropes and other plastic debris can get tangled up with turtles and cause them to drown. Preventing the plastic from getting into the ocean and cleaning up what's already there is an obvious solution , however easier said than done :( #plasticocean #seaturtle #plasticfree #stopsingleuseplastic 📷 @mishajannard

We shared the most beautiful, intimate and tender moments with this cheeky youngster and his mum, moments that will forever stay in my blue heart💙 @katy_m @mattdraperphotography Being born in warm sheltered waters of Tongan islands its hard to imagine that this young humpback calve will soon undergo an incredible 6000 km journey to Antarctic. To get ready for this trip calves are believed to consume up to 150 litres of their mum's rich and fatty milk per day. Allowing them to gain weight at the rate of about 45 kgs per day as the mother grooms them for the long journey south where they'll learn to feed itself. #humpbackwhale #blueplanet #tonga #whales

I dreamt about these angels last night 🦋👼 So grateful @shawnheinrichs for capturing this dream like moment and for all your incredible work on behalf of our planet ocean 🌏 #Repost @shawnheinrichs ・・・ Connecting with Manta Rays creates a connection and stirs emotions that words simply cannot capture. This year in Isla Mujeres, in addition to hundreds of whale sharks, we were blessed to be joined by trains of manta rays, circling, looping and gliding right over our heads, their mouths wide open as they gulped down delicious plankton! Our talented team, which included @paulnicklen , @cristinamittermeier , @jim_abernethy , @candace crespi and @mishajannard , captured all of these incredible experiences using our @reddigitalcinema Weapon Helium cameras, creating terabytes of stunning 8K footage for use in future conservation stories. In this shot, our close friend and talented free diver @mishajannard drifts below a train of curious manta rays, all the while capturing her experience on her RED Weapon Monstro 8k! In this day and age, it's almost impossible to find moments you can experience with such incredible emotional intensity, feeling of connection and gratitude. Moments that leave your heart filled with joy far beyond what words could describe. Under the expert guidance of @mattdraperphotography and Teau we enjoyed magical encounter/playtime with this curious and cheeky humpback calf named by @katy_m Tahi ( meaning sea in Tongan ). I am so grateful to Tahi’s mum for allowing us strange looking creatures to spend a time of wonder, laughter and happy tears with her most valuable possession. We loved our days on board of the KIWI MAGIC,starting early with hot coffee, stargazing and waiting for sunrise to appear on a horizon, learning from Matt and Teau about their “whale whispering “ways. 🐋💙🐋 Special thank you to Pat and Keith of @kiwimagic for all their care and for letting Kiwi Magic become our home for the week. #humpbackwhale #whales

Fun fact 🤯 most sharks have 20 to 30 rows of pearly whites but whale sharks have more than 300 rows , that means a whale shark has 3000 individual teeth each one about the size of a match head. All those teeth don’t do very much as whale sharks exclusively dine on very small life forms like plankton, krill, fish eggs... how can you not be in love with these beautiful gentle giant “vacuum cleaners “ 💙🦈 #whaleshark

Always so good to visit my Honu friends 💙 Did you know that a sea turtle's sex is determined by it's nesting environment? Climate change is having significant effect on sea turtle population around the world. As sands warm ,more females will hatch relative to males ; if the sand temperature tops 84.7 degrees during incubation, only females will emerge. #imbalance #climatechange #seaturtle

Happy World Elephant Day 🌎 it is estimated that up to 20,000 Elephants are killed by poachers every year to meet the demand for ivory in Asia, particularly in China. Although Chinese government has taken steps toward closing the trade , there is still a long way to go to end excessive killing of Elephants for ivory . Only around 415,000 African Elephants are left in the wild! Asian Elephants are primarily threatened by habitat loss, as human population on the continent continues to grow the species’ remaining habitat is shrinking fast... only around 50,000 Asian elephants remain. #saveelephants #stopivorytrade #stoppoaching @africanwildlifefoundation #worldelephantday
