Flowers for my father - when I look at flowers, which I do often, I have an urge to do something - to photograph them, to paint them, to recreate them in paper, or copper. It’s an impulse to engage with them, to celebrate their beauty, to underline their fleeting nature - and my own. This spring I took a class with @thegreenvase , who makes the most wondrous paper flowers, and this weekend I made these flowers, some inspired by the blooms in my garden, for my father. . . . #paperflowers #thebeautyofflowers #flowersformyfather #paperrose #paperpeony #paperdianthus #paperanemone #papercosmo

Selecting images for my show at Wave Hill in September, and I think I have to include this one. Liriodendron tulipifera is a native American tree in the Magnolia family. It can grow up to 100 feet tall, and its flowers are seldom seen up close. . . . #liriodendrontulipifera #florilegium #wavehill #flowerportrait #botanicalart #botanicalstudy #springflower #floralphotography

Knitted my first Fair Isle sweater and made a small paper rose as a gift to Olive Rose, who came on earth three months ago. There is something magical about making things with one’s hands, to make use of an ancient knowledge like knitting, a craft born of the most basic human need for protection from the elements. Fair Isle knitting, a traditional technique from one of the Shetland islands, was popularized in the 1920s by the Prince of Wales, who wore the colorful jumpers in public. . . . #knitting #fairisleknitting #purlsohopattern #paperflower #aroseforarose #homemadegifts #handcraft #historyofknitting

“... barely an hour from Tangier’s outer reaches, Berber women trot by on their mules, wrapped against the sun in red-and-white striped mendil cloths and shaded with vast straw hats. A shepherd wearing a rose-colored djellaba over his jeans scatters goats on the pitted, stony track that rises steeply...an Edenic landscape of plunging hills and valleys, ringing with goat bells and the distant crashing waves of the Atlantic.” Rohuna, as described so well by Hamish Bowles in the June issue of Vogue magazine, with photos by me from the book Eden Revisited, coming out in September. . . #EdenRevisited #Rohuna #UmbertoPasti #moroccangarden #wildflowersofnorthernmorocco #rizzolibooks #redpoppies

Spring at last! I’ve been photographing the flowers at Wave Hill for my Florilegium project. Beautiful, fragrant flowers everywhere I look —from the minuscule wonders in the shady woodland to the showy blossoms on the towering trees —make me dizzy with joy. At the end of the day I go home with the specimens and make arrangements like this, nothing short of a garden in vase. And this is all I want to do at the moment. . . . #spring #Florilegium #paeoniamascula #trilliumluteum #cornusflorida #exochordaracemosa #convallariamajalisrosea #trilliumstamenium #fritillariapersica #disporumflavens #gardeninavase #floralphotography #inbloom #whatsbloomingnow #springflowers 🌸

Galanthus nivalis — from the Greek gala, meaning milk, and anthos, meaning flower. Nivalis means “of the snow.” I love its name in French, perce-neige, with its implied strength and fierceness in such a tiny and delicate flower.

#tbt I have had the fortune to spend time in some beautiful and interesting places. This is one of my favorite lofts in SoHo, from many years ago, David and Monica Zwirner’s home back then. The Raymond Pettibon mural always puts a smile on my face, especially on a cold winter day. Chairs and table by Franz West. This place embodied the spirit of SoHo before it became fashionable for millionaires and media tycoons. . . . #placesilove #livingwithart #raymondpettibon #franzwest #sohonyc #davidzwirner #thewaywelive

“...everything worthy is fragile and under threat, is prey to time and invisible to power, and yet affection keeps the accounting in the black. Worthy things, invested with affection, pass into ‘the now/which is eternal’. I don’t know how this can be...and yet I believe that it is so.” Wendell Berry, writing about the poet Hayden Carruth, 2008 . . . #everythingworthyisfragile #preytotime #affection #wendellberry

Knitting on a rainy day and thinking of the stark lives of the Aran Islanders, whose livelihood depended on fishing in the sea and raising sheep for wool and food. The fishermen’s wives knitted sweaters that were laden with symbols—the cable stitch to depict the fisherman’s ropes and thus a wish for a productive day at sea, the diamond stitch to remind the wearer of the small fields of the islands, the moss stitch to represent the seaweed used to fertilize the barren land. Each sweater bears a unique pattern, full of meanings, closely guarded and passed through generations. . . . #themeaningofaransweaters #historyofknitting #rainysaturday #knitting #craftandhistory
