Happy #WorldSnakeDay ! 🐍 . There are more than 3000 different snake species, widely distributed in every continent except Antarctica. They range in size from 4 inches to more than 22 feet. Just two of each ten species are venomous, and they are so important to control rodents populations. Education is fundamental to avoid massive and unnecessary kills of these mystical reptiles. . In 2015 while walking throughout the dunes looking for Desert Chameleons in Namibia, I found this perfectly camouflaged Sidewinding Adder (Bitis peringueyi ). Just a few examples come to my mind of such a good camouflage in the animal kingdom! Sadly, these vipers and the Desert Chameleons cannot camouflage against every time increasing number of jeeps that drive all over the dunes, without respecting the marked trails. All this, for a couple of minutes of fun with sand surfing! . © 2019. @tropicalherping All rights reserved. .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #nature #animals #macro #closeup #snakes #reptiles #africa #namibia #herps #herping #wildlifeplanet #snakeday #snakesofinstagram #reptilesofinstagram @ilcp_photographers

Have you ever ask yourself why these famous and charismatic birds are called "boobies"? The name comes from the Spanish word "bobo" ("stupid", or "foolish" ) because these birds are, like other seabirds, clumsy on land. But also because their apparent fearlessness of humans. And even more in the Galapagos Islands! . Blue-footed Boobies are fish eaters, but they can also eat squid and offal. After hunting, they come back to the nest and feed the chicks through regurgitation. . Thanks to @metrojourneys for the unique trip! The moment that you jump in the water in Darwin and Wolf Island you feel that you are immersed in a marine documentary by yourself. Everywhere that you see around is full of giant schools of fishes, sea lions, marine iguanas, and a lot of sharks. It's a perfect reminder fo us how a healthy and protected ocean looks like. . This was my first time doing underwater photography, and what better than start in one of the most important global marine sanctuaries, with the advice, tips, and inspiration from the great @cristinamittermeier and @paulnicklen Here the king of Darwin and Wolf Island, a massive Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus ), the largest non-cetacean animal in the world! We swam with around 10 of them during our days there, since very big adults to a tiny 9 ft baby. Normally they were other sharks with them as well, like here a Galapagos Shark (Carcharhinus galapagensis ). A normal day in the sharkiest place on Earth! . Having amazing and very motivating days in Galapagos collaborating with my top conservation heroes @cristinamittermeier and @paulnicklen So happy to discover that in addition to being global ambassadors for the protection of the environment, they are such a great, and inspiring human beings. Our planet needs more people like them! . Cristina, Paul and a world-class army of conservationists and storytellers run @sealegacy , a foundation that looks for creating healthy and abundant oceans, for all of us and for our planet. Take a look at their work and support them if you can! . Here the majestic Swallow-Tailed Gull (Creagrus furcatus ) during its preening time. Let's start the week with great and motivating news! . The Galapagos Land Iguana (Conolophus subcristatus ) is a Galapagos endemic species that inhabit some islands in the archipelago. Santiago (James ) used to be one of these islands. There were so abundant there that Charles Darwin described them with these words: . "...when we were left at James, we could not for some time find a spot free from their burrows on which to pitch our single tent" . Sadly, the last record of Galapagos Land Iguana in Santiago was precisely when Darwin was there, in 1835. In the years since then, their entire population was wiped out by introduced feral animals such as pigs, goats, rats, cats, and dogs. . However, during the last decades and after tremendous efforts of the @parquegalapagos , @ambiente_ec , @islandconservation , @lindbladexp , and @masseyuni , they managed to eradicate from the island the feral pigs, dogs, cats, and goats, making Santiago again a safer place for the Galapagos Land Iguana to re-conquer their island. . So, early this year, the Galapagos National Park started the reintroduction of the population with the first 1436 Galapagos Land Iguanas. This was the first part of the reintroduction project, that also includes moving more iguanas to Santiago, but also keep monitoring how the population responds in Santiago and how is their diet going. . This picture was taken a few days ago in Santiago, and it's definitely one of the few sights of a Galapagos Land Iguana on this island, almost 200 years after their last record! . It was fantastic for me not just to see some individuals there, but also see them eating abundant and healthy vegetation, now with no introduced herbivores on the island. . Another successfully step forwards the conservation and restoration of the Enchanted Islands. . Matting time for the Critically Endangered Waved Albatrosses (Phoebastria irrorata )! . Their courtship is considered one of the most amazing animal's behaviors on Earth. Consist of goofy but affectionate ritual dances, that includes rapid bill circling and bowing beak clacking, and an upraised bill to make a whoo hoo sound. This creates bonds between males and females form over several years and will last for a lifetime.  In fact, the birds will court each other for years using those dances in order to pick the perfect partner. . Today is Endangered Species Day, an opportunity to learn about the importance of protecting endangered species and everyday actions we can take to help protect them. . This is the Endangered Tapichalaca Torrenteer (Hyloscirtus tapichalaca ), which belongs to a group of crazy-looking frogs that occur in remote areas in the high Andes, always associated with small waterfalls, creeks, and well-preserved habitats. This is why they are generally more threatened than other amphibians. . The last report of the @unenvironment and the @ipbes_ aware us that thanks to human pressures, one million species may be pushed to extinction in the next few years, with serious consequences for human beings as well as the rest of life on Earth. The main threats for global biodiversity are deforestation; overfishing; bushmeat hunting and poaching; climate change; pollution; and invasive alien species. This study was the result of 15,000 scientific and government sources and compiled by 145 expert authors from 50 countries. . What can we do? Our society needs to shift from a sole focus on chasing economic growth. Of course, this is very challenging, but it could get easier if countries begin to base their economies on an understanding that nature is the foundation for development. Shifting to nature-based planning can help provide a better quality of life with far less impact. . Finally, there is overwhelming evidence that nature managed by indigenous peoples and local communities is in generally better health than nature managed by national or corporate institutions. At least a quarter of the global land area is traditionally owned, managed, used, or occupied by indigenous peoples. However, their land tenure and other rights are not always protected or recognized by all countries. Nor is their deep knowledge of the land and their values often considered in policies and decisions by governments. That needs to change! . © 2019. @tropicalherping All rights reserved . . . . . #nature #biodiversity #conservationphotography #frogs #frogsofinstagram #amphibiansofinstagram @ilcp_photographers @unbiodiversity @unfccc @unitednations #instagood #picoftheday #ecuador #endangeredspeciesday

A Blue Morpho flying it's for me one of the best ways to summarize the essence and exoticness of neotropical rainforests. . They are a prime example of iridescent blue coloration in the insect world. Their color it's caused by optical interference from the microstructures of their wings, reason that has raised up a lot of interest in researchers. . Due to its unique shining color, Blue Morphos has been widely hunted during the last decades. However, habitat loss by deforestation remains the main threat to the survival of this species. . © 2019. @tropicalherping All rights reserved . . . . . #nature #wildlife #biodiversity #conservation #conservationphotography #animals #insects #butterfly #insectsofinstagram #butterfliesofinstagram #bluemorpho #morpho #behavior @ilcp_photographers @napowildlifecenter #amazon #ecuador #yasuni #tropics #rainforest #bugs #bugsofinstagram

Another unforgettable experience comes to an end in my beloved Sri Lanka! Can't wait to come back to this wonderful country next year. . This was one of the highlights of our trip: the Hump-Nosed Lizard (Lyriocephalus scutatus ), an endemic reptile that feeds essentially of earthworms and also arthropods, including termites, butterflies, and moths. . Sadly, this is one of the most sought animals in wildlife trafficking. For this and other reasons, the environmental laws and controls in Sri Lankan national parks are becoming more strict every day. . © 2019. @tropicalherping All rights reserved. . . . . . #nature #wildlife #biodiversity #conservation #srilanka #sinharaja #reptiles #reptilesofinstagram #lizard #lizardsofinstagram #herps #herping #asia @ilcp_photographers #portrait #instagood #picoftheday #animals

Our farewell from Yala National Park was definitely the best one that I have ever had there: to admire a huge female of Sri Lankan Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus inornatus ) with her tiny cubs! It was absolutely fantastic to be a witness while all three interacting with each other and resting almost on the top of a tree. . These elusive mammals are highly threatened, with an estimated population less than 1000 individuals. Destruction of dry-zone natural forest is its main threat because unlike other large Sri Lankan animals, the Sri Lankan Sloth Bear is highly dependent on natural forests for its food source. . © 2019. @tropicalherping All rights reserved. . . . . . #nature #wildlife #biodiversity #conservation #mammal #mammalsofinstagram #bear #bearsofinstagram @ilcp_photographers #asia #srilanka #slothbear #behavior #cub #instagood #picoftheday @bbcearth #earthcapture @wildlifeplanet

In addition to Geckos, Lava Lizards, and Pink Iguanas, the highest point of Galapagos is also home of a huge reptile: the Wolf Volcano Giant-Tortoise (Chelonoidis becki ). . This tortoise feeds on hard grasses and leaves of shrubs. Interactions between males of the Wolf Volcano Giant-Tortoise include biting, gaping, neck extensions, and pushing the opponent. . Wolf Volcano Giant-Tortoise is considered a vulnerable species because more than half of the population has disappeared in the last 180 years. Today, it is estimated that 7,000–8,000 individuals of the Wolf Volcano Giant-Tortoise remain. Causes of the population decline include harvesting by fishermen, and the introduction of goats, pigs, dogs, and rodents. . © 2019. @tropicalherping All rights reserved. . . . . . #nature #wildlife #biodiversity #galapagos #isabela #wolf #wolfvolcano #ecuador #islands @ilcp_photographers #instagood #picoftheday #earthcapture @bbcearth #conservation #ecuador #galapagos #sea #reptiles #tortoises #turtles #herpetology #herps #herping #reptilesofinstagram #turtlesofinstagram #tortoisesofinstagram

Some places inside the Ecuadorian Amazon hold up to 10 species of monkeys in one locality, like the famous Yasuni National Park. One of the most emblematic is the Red Howler Monkey (Alouatta seniculus ). . Howler Monkeys are considered the loudest land animal, their vocalizations can be heard clearly up to 5 km! They howl to relate to intergroup spacing and territory protection, as well as possibly to mate-guarding. This is also used to prevent confrontations between groups, which will prevent energy loss by avoiding physical fighting. Because of their low-sugar diets, conservation of energy is key. . They live in the canopy looking for insects, seeds, fruits, and flowers, but mainly leaves; the most important part of their diet, they cannot live without it for more than a week. . Howler monkeys are threatened mainly by human predation, habitat destruction, and the pet trade. . © 2019. @tropicalherping All rights reserved . . . . . #nature #wildlife #biodiversity #conservation #conservationphotography #ecuador #yasuni #amazon #mammals #primates #apes #behavior #closeup #portrait #tropics @ilcp_photographers #yasuni #monkeys #monkey #animals #rainforest #mammalsofinstagram #monkeysofinstagram #instagood #picoftheday

Happy #WorldWaterDay ! . World Water Day is an annual @unitednations observance day that highlights the importance of freshwater. The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. . The theme of 2019 is about tackling the water crisis by addressing the reasons why so many people are being left behind. Marginalized groups – women, children, refugees, indigenous peoples, disabled people – are often overlooked, and may face discrimination, as they try to access safe water. .
