Happy World Lion Day! Today we celebrate. Promoting coexistence has been hard on many days but what fruit it has borne. Our lion population in northern Kenya is growing, people have taken ownership over the lions, and, this week, the lions have been active in the best of ways. Thank you to all of you for standing by us, for supporting us, for helping secure a place for real lions in our future. ©Jack and Rikki Swenson #worldlionday #conservation #northernkenyalions #lion #lions #ewasolions #lionpride #lionconservation

The Lion King is finally here. While the world celebrates Simba, Nala and Mufasa, we are celebrating Nanai and what she represents. Nanai, a Samburu word meaning “My Own” today represents some of the successes of our project. In northern Kenya, the lion population has tripled over this past decade, thanks in part to our community programmes with warriors, women and children. Nanai's cubs in this picture are a happy reminder of this. But across the continent, lion populations have halved since the last Lion King was launched. The challenges of lion conservation are great; humans and wildlife both need space and those who live alongside wildlife sometimes do so at great cost. So what can you do as you are enthralled by lions this weekend? Simply remember that we can Stop the Loss, we can Reduce the cost and Unlock the value of living with lions. #Simba #TheLionKing #Samburu #Lions #wildlife Photo credit: Paula Kahumbu/WildlifeDirect

#Repost @chancellordavid with @kimcy929_repost • • • • • • Photographs by David Chancellor @chancellordavid - northern Kenya - this story plays backwards - what you’re seeing here is a camel we were called to that had been attacked by hyena. This really is the end of the story, not the beginning and this is why: the hyenas had responded to the noise of lions killing a camel, and attacked the other camels too. As solar water points become almost commonplace, semi-nomadic communities become less ‘nomadic’, and villages spring up where they didn’t exist before. As a result, lions are pushed away due to human encroachment, but, the water points supply opportunities for livestock kills by lion and hyena. This obviously puts the lion in danger of retaliation by angry pastoralists who have lost livestock to predators. It falls to @ewasolions to both mediate, and prevent this situation escalating out of control. It’s a complex fragile balance that needs to be struck as local communities have a right to access water. Similarly, wildlife has a right to live without human encroachment. Can’t help thinking that the solution is much better liaison with those working on the ground such as @ewasolions as to where boreholes should be put, in order to benefit both humans, and wildlife. Turn on the volume! Excited to report we saw 3 wild dogs this morning near our camp - our first sighting in a long time. You can hear them calling to each other in this clip. In 2017, distemper wiped out most of the wild dogs in the area and we hope they are now making a comeback. We are also now beginning to work with domestic dogs in the area- stay tuned on this! #wilddogs #endangered #Samburu #rare #distemper #disease #recovery

We are so proud of Jeneria and congratulations to all the finalists! #Repost @tusk_org ( @get_repost ) ・・・ We are delighted to announce our 2019 Tusk Award for Conservation in Africa shortlist! ⁣ ⁣ This award is given to an individual who has been judged to be emerging as a leading conservationist in recognition of their outstanding contribution to, and considerable success, in their chosen field. For this year’s extraordinary finalists, extinction is simply not an option. Thanks to their work, there is a brighter future for Africa's wildlife. Meet them below!⁣ ⁣ Dr Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, Uganda⁣ ⁣ At the age of 25 Gladys was the first woman to be appointed Veterinary Officer for the Ugandan Wildlife Service, soon pioneering the first wildlife translocation to restock Uganda's national parks following years of poaching during the country's civil war. ⁣ ⁣ Tomas Diagne, Senegal⁣ ⁣ Over the past 26 years, Tomas, African biologist/conservationist and Director and Founder of the African Chelonian Institute, has focused his work on the protection of tortoise and the freshwater and sea turtles of West Africa. ⁣ ⁣ Jeneria Lekilelei, Kenya⁣ ⁣ Recognising the urgent need to engage his own age group in lion conservation, Jeneria's “Warrior Watch” initiative was launched. Turning the warriors into ambassadors for lions, they serve as a network working across multiple communities, enabling Ewaso Lions to monitor these highly threatened species and reduce conflict incidents over a wide-ranging area. ⁣ ⁣ Click 🔗🔗 in bio to read more about these  #ConservationHeroes#TuskAwards2019 #ForAllTheyDo #TuskAwards #ConservationHeroes#SavethePlanet #TCAFinalist

Our team was called after some lost camels were reported and we knew there were lions in the area. Letupukwa and his team found the lost camel and managed to locate the herders - in the meantime the camel gave birth! #Repost @chancellordavid ( @get_repost ) ・・・ Photograph by David Chancellor @chancellordavid - Samburu Lmuget, sasaab village, northern Kenya - I met Jeneria Lekilelei (centre of frame ) over a decade ago now whilst sitting under a tree in northern Kenya. I was, I’ll admit, pretty lost. What at first was a slightly nervous moment as this warrior simply came and sat next to me, has over the years developed into a deep respect both for the man, the human that is J, and his work with @ewasolions in the Samburu, northern Kenya. The African lion population has declined by 43% in the last 20 years and lions now occupy only 8% of their historical range in Africa. The estimated numbers of lions across Africa are approximately 20,000. In Kenya, the national population now numbers less than 2,000 individuals. At current rates of decline, the species could become extinct here within the next two decades. This reduction in lion numbers is primarily due to habitat loss and conflict with humans, typically when lions kill people’s livestock. Lions and other large carnivores are wide-ranging species, and designated protected areas are often not large enough to ensure their long-term survival. It is crucial, therefore, that conservation of these species, as well as their prey, is addressed throughout the landscape, which not only incorporates protected areas, but also the surrounding areas where local people live. @ewasolions is dedicated to conserving lions and other large carnivores by promoting co-existence between people and wildlife, they work hand-in-hand with local communities to provide education, training and improved conservation practices that help people and wildlife, using sound science to help guide the long-term conservation of lions across community conservancies and protected areas in northern Kenya, and I love their work 👍🏿👍🏼💚to see more of it, follow me here @chancellordavid @thephotosociety @everydayextinction - on assignment for @magazinegeo sharing the amazing work of @ewasolions #conserving #conservation #carnevores #northernkenya #kenya - the full story is out today in a special issue of GEO Perspektive.
