Thunderstorms are a vital part of the summer in Florida. I love the way the clouds roll across the sky and build to a powerful and awe-inspiring spectacle of light and sound. However, it can be dangerous to photograph under these conditions. During this storm I had lightning striking all around me. After one very close strike, I covered up my camera and hurried back to my truck without the camera, to wait until the storm ended. FACTORY FALLS 24 2013 I was invited to be Artist in Residence at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and I spent my time exploring this wonderful park. I felt like I was in the middle of the wilderness miles from anyone, when in reality I was surrounded by masses of people and only a 2 ½ hour drive from New York City! I found Factory Falls at George W. Childs Park high above the valley. It had recently been added to the park property, so I was excited to photograph the location. At the time I was there the park had built a boardwalk that followed the river as it dropped into waterfalls all the way down the mountainside and into the valley where the park was located. It was a beautiful, but sometimes wet walk. I spent two days photographing Factory Falls, but I could have spent my entire time in that area. It was truly beautiful. . . . . #clydebutcher #delawarewatergap #bnwlandscape #largeformatphotography #largeformatcamera #bnwfilm

One hot summer day I went out into Florida Bay chasing clouds. It was one of those days when the clouds were so close to the water, I thought if I was just a little bit taller I could reach them. ☁️ I chased clouds all that day until they bunched up and I could tell a storm was coming. By that time, I was totally lost. I hadn’t been paying any attention to where I was going! HORSESHOE BEND 3 2013 As I inched closer and closer to the edge of the cliff, Niki started yelling at me saying, “No photograph is worth your life!” She was a nervous wreck the entire time we were there. The problem is that in order to get the whole river at the bottom of the canyon in the photograph I had to get to the edge. Photographers with digital cameras were actually laying down and hanging their camera out over the edge. It wasn’t an easy or safe way to photograph, but it sure was beautiful. . . . #clydebutcher #horseshoebend #glencanyon #silvergelatin #largeformatphotography #largeformatfilm

LOOSESCREW GATOR © 1996 📷 This guy is the resident gator of the pond in my backyard. 🐊 Why is he called Loosescrew Gator? Well, when I bought the property in the middle of the Big Cypress National Preserve to build my gallery and home, a friend said I had to have a screw loose to build so far away from civilization. So, I called my property the Loosescrew Sanctuary… and this impressive creature became the Loosescrew Gator. #alligator #gator #florida_greatshots #clydebutcher #monochrome #ilfordMGFB #ilfordphoto #darkroomphotography #alternativeprocess #filmphotography #roamflorida #floridawild

ST. VINCENT ISLAND DRIFTWOOD © 2005 📷 St. Vincent Island is a National Wildlife Refuge. It is an undeveloped island and a wonder to visit. I only had a couple of days to spend photographing the island, but I could have stayed a long, long time. When I found this beautiful piece of driftwood with so much texture on it I couldn’t resist photographing the beauty of it. #sunshinestate #visitflorida #blackandwhitephotography #bnw_captures #monochrome #blackandwhite #photography #clydebutcher #clydebutcherphotography #ilfordMGFB #ilfordphoto #fineartphotography #naturephotograph #gf_bnw

SANTA FE RIVER 2012 During the dry season of Florida I had first discovered this area of the Santa Fe River. It was beautiful and I enjoyed photographing it, but I wondered what it would be like when the wet season began and so I returned. I was pleased to see how much more beautiful the scene was with water at the base of the cypress trees. . . . . #clydebutcher #santaferiver #largeformatphotography #floridawild

SAGUARO 9 © 2011 📷 Visiting the Saguaro National Park was like walking into a Doctor Seuss book! There are all kinds of strange and weird looking plants, and do I need to say there was a lot of texture in those cactus?! That texture seemed to jump out at us. 🌵 By the end of the day we had prickly things all over our shoes and clothes. I was only there for a day and regretted that I didn’t have time to stay longer. There are so many photographic opportunities in that strange environment that I definitely want to return. Which national park is your favorite? Which do you think is most unique? #saguaronationalpark #findyourpark #explore #photograph #photography #clydebutcher

BADLANDS 1 © 2006 📷 We were only at the Badlands for 24 hours, but wow, what a wondrous time it was! Complete with tornadoes, a violent storm ripped through the area. I photographed like mad, trying to capture the sunlightt hitting the landscape as it popped in and out of the dark storm clouds. By the end of the day the dark clouds covered the sky. The next morning I woke up at our usual 4:00 a.m. and looked out the window. There wasn’t a star or even a glimmer of light on the horizon. Thinking the sun would be blocked by the clouds, I went back to bed. I lay there for a few minutes and changed my mind. As we drove out of the parking lot, the sun began to break through a slit in the clouds. In front of me was this wonderful mountain formation with dark storm clouds behind it and the sun starting to cast brilliant light on the mountains in the foreground. Niki and I jumped out of the car and set up the camera as quickly as we could. We captured the scene just before the clouds covered up the sun. #badlandsnps #badlandsnationalpark #nationalparkservice #nps #findyourpark #americasbestidea #clydebutcher #clydebutcherphotography #fineartphotography #landscapecaptures #darkroomphotography #alternativeprocess #silvergelatinprint #largeformat #analogphotography

MATLACHA PASS © 1991 📷 This photographic experience was one of the most comfortable I ever had. Niki and I saw the cloud formation forming over the still waters of Charlotte Harbor. We pulled our pontoon boat up onto a sandbank, and while I climbed out of the boat to set up the camera, Niki made breakfast. I’d take a shot of the cloud and while waiting for it to change shape, I’d have a pancake; then take another shot, followed by a pancake… and so on... 🥞 📍 Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve, near Cape Coral, Florida #clydebutcher #monochromatic #ilfordphoto #analogphotography #silvergelatinprint #largeformatprinting #largeformat #blackandwhitephotography

Back in 2009 when I captured Gator Hook 1, the area was entering the last throes of the dry season. There were a few pools of water left, but for the most part everything was reaching toward the sky in search of rain. As I photographed the scene, a gator lying on the grass at the end of the pond eyed me suspiciously. This was his only source of water for miles around and he wasn’t taking it kindly that I was invading his territory. . . . . #clydebutcher #explorebigcypress #everglades #largeformatphotography #latgeformatfilm

FOGGY FOREST 2 © 1971 📷 During the early days of our marriage, we spent our lives in northern California where I fell in love with the ecosystem of the redwood forests. There is a power that pulsates from the redwoods and it fills me with gratitude. One day, while taking a picture, I watched a giant tree crash to the ground. It did make a sound, and left a huge hole in the forest, allowing the sunlight to reach the forest floor. Although I love photographing Florida, I decided to return to the other place in this country that holds my heart: the redwood forest. Niki and I wanted to see what the ecosystem looked like 40 years after that tree had fallen. We found it covered with ferns, lichen, and mushrooms. A whole new ecosystem had been created and the tree was still in the process of returning to the earth. 🌲 #clydebutcher #bwphotography #monochrome #landscapephotography #darkroomphotography #alternativeprocess #ilfordphoto #silvergelatineprint #landscapelovers #naturephotography #noicemag #shotonfilm

MONUMENT VALLEY 4 Monument Valley Navajo National Park, Arizona Photographs of Monument Valley don’t do justice to the wide-open space filled with such large monuments. It is humbling to stand near any one of them. It is natural to want to capture the awe of the monuments, but because of their size it is difficult to capture the immense size in a photograph. I photographed each monument just as most photographers do, but the longer I stayed in Monument Valley the more I wanted to capture the beauty of the environment in which the monuments are located. I began photographing differently. This image reflects the desert and the wide-open space where the monuments proudly stand. . . . . #clydebutcher #navajonationalpark #monumentvalley #americathebeautiful #largeformatcamera #largeformatphotography

AGAWAMUCK CREEK FALLS 3 © 2006 📷 My favorite period of art is the Hudson Bay period. I love the paintings from that era showing the romantic beauty of the earth. I have always wanted to photograph along the Hudson, but when I tried to find a place to shoot all I could find was man-made scenery. When I told the Columbia Land Conservancy Trust in Chatham, New York about my dilemma, they helped me to find the natural landscape in the area. Thanks to them I was able to photograph this beautiful little waterfall. Tell me -- is there any one art movement, or period in art history, that you feel most connected with? Is there a certain style of art that speaks to you the most? #FineArtPhotography #Photography #Agawamuck Creek #HudsonRiver #clctrust

MAXILLARIA INAUDITA 1 2015 I had the pleasure of being invited to Selby Garden’s Orchid House early in the morning before they opened to photograph some of their orchids. This was unusual photography for me, as I rarely do close up photography. My customary imagery is large wide-open landscapes. However, now that I’m getting involved in digital photography, I can have better depth of field and faster exposure times than with a large format camera, so I gladly accepted the invitation. To photograph the orchids I used my Sony A7R Cambo Artus with an 80mm enlarging lens. This orchid is native to the Costa Rican and Panamanian cloud forests. . . . #clydebutcher #clydebutcherphotography #floralphotography #selbygardens

ADAMS RANCH 2003 I have been fortunate to visit many of Florida’s ranches. It is always a joy to be with people who love the land and understand the need to take care of it so that their livelihood will not disappear. One of the great ranches in Florida is the Adams Ranch. The ranch is known for its environmental stand, so spending the day with Bud Adams was inspirational. In the middle of the day Bud invited us to his house for lunch. When I walked into the house there were several ‘Beanie’ Backus paintings hanging on the walls. When I commented on the paintings Bud told me that Beanie was a friend and that he spent a lot of time out in the wilds of the Adams Ranch painting and sketching. Most people have no idea that a very large number of Beanie Backus paintings were created on the Adams Ranch property. That made me smile, realizing that a fellow artists saw the beauty of Florida in his heart and wanted to share that beauty through his paintings so that others could see it too. . . . . #clydebutcher #silvergelatinprint #darkroomphotographer #ilfordMGFB #floridalandscapephotography

PEPPERWOOD REDWOODS 14 2013 When planning our trip out west to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary, The Avenue of the Giants – Humboldt Redwood Forest State Park – was a must on our list. During our young marriage we spent a lot of time in this redwood forest and came to love the place. It was here that we felt the ancient spirit of life; it was here that I hugged my first tree and found a wonderful appreciation of those who came before me. I respect and admire those who worked so hard to save this forest…those who could see the life that was to come and saved this beautiful part of our earth so I could enjoy it. We have had a lot of wonderful experiences here. Whenever we’re in California, we try to make it back to this place that feels like a spiritual home. . . . . #clydebutcher redwoodnps #pepperwood #redwoodnationalpark #californiaadventure #silvergelatinprint

SNAKE RIVER 15 2006 I have always loved Ansel Adams’ photograph of the Snake River, especially the silver quality of the river running through the picture. I wanted to try and capture that same silver streak in a photograph too. I stopped at this location eight times before I was able to capture this image. Not only was the light shining on the river, creating that wonderful silver streak, there were also great clouds around the Tetons, which helped add depth to the image. The beauty and grandeur of the Grand Tetons jutting out of the flat valley is both humbling and wondrous. I spent nine days photographing the mountains and enjoyed every moment. . . . . #mygrandteton #snakeriver #grandtetonnationalpark #findyourprak #americasbestidea #clydebutcher #americathebeautiful

CORN LILY 2013 This image is very different than my normal style of photography. @niki_butcher_photography loves to photograph plants and was playing around photographing this plant when she decided they were just too wonderful for a small digital camera. She came and got me, requesting that I photograph them with my large format camera so that she could see all the detail when the image gets enlarged to a giant size. She says, “…so, because Clyde loves me, he took this photograph for me.” Yes, that is true and it wasn’t easy! It was dusky, so my exposure was ten minutes. In a large format camera everything is upside down and backwards, which makes it hard to make good compositions. However, when the image is an abstract, it’s even harder. I really didn’t think I managed to capture it due to all of the technical problems. However, I like it so well I might just do a few more close up images down the road! . . . . #clydebutcher #darkroomphotography #alternativeprocess #sequoianationalpark #northerncalifornia

CAYO COSTA ISLAND 3 1993 June, when the sun is at its northernmost point, is the only month in which to photograph this part of the island. Niki and I spent an entire month in our boat anchored off the island waiting for the right light and perfect cloud formations for a photograph. I love the beauty and power of an approaching storm, but while waiting for this shot, we came close to being overtaken by a violent thunderstorm. All around us boats were heading for cover, while I waited for the right moment to take this picture. Finally, the moment came, I took the photograph, and then we headed for the safety of the harbor, which we reached just as the storm broke around us. . . . . #clydebutcher #clydebutcherphotography #pureflorida #floridaphotographer #silvergelatinprint

LAKE ISTOKPOGA 1 1989 This picture was tricky only because I had problems getting the fog. A photographer friend, George Schaffer, joined me on this trip. We would get up before dawn and drive to the lake, which took longer than an hour to reach because every morning there was incredibly dense fog. When George and I reached the fishing camp on the edge of the lake and looked out over the lake, the sun was shining on the water! It seemed like the fog would bank right up to the edge of the lake and then dissipate. I would turn the car around and go right back home. George and I took this trip every morning for a week, determined to get the foggy shot we knew was going to be there. It was very frustrating. On the fifth morning we decided, to heck with the fog, we’d launch the boat anyway and take pictures of the lake. Lake Istokpoga is a beautiful place, and there is plenty to photograph without having fog. After a couple hours on the lake, around 9:00 am, I was setting up my camera in the water and the fog started forming on the lake! I couldn’t believe it, and was afraid it wouldn’t last, so I set the camera up as rapidly as possible (not an easy task when standing in three feet of water ). I shot 4-5 images before the fog disappeared. It came and left right on queue. It sure would be nice if nature was always so cooperative! . . . . #clydebutcher #clydebutcherphotography #floridalandscapephotography #floridalandscape #largeformat
