Photo by @shawnheinrichs // The deep sense of connection I experience with marine animals and the greater feeling of unity with all beings in nature inspire a profound level of empathy and compassion within me and drive me to offer myself in service to protect them. Recognizing that people only protect what they love, I am on a mission capture inspiring and dramatic imagery that connects the global community to the beauty and vulnerability of threatened marine species. And through this connection, I hope the world will ultimately share my passion for these creatures and be inspired to act, before it is too late. Sharks are some the most charismatic and captivating of all the creatures in the oceans. Ever since I was a small child growing up along the wild coast in Durban, South Africa, I have been fascinated by them. I have been blessed to be able to combine my passion for photography with my love of sharks; to create imagery that has played an key role in supporting and inspiring shark conservation efforts around the planet. 💙🦈 #savesharks #turningthetide @sealegacy @lonelywhale

Photograph by John Weller // What happens in the Southern Ocean has ramifications for the global climate. A glacier the size of Florida in Antarctica, called the Thwaites glacier, is increasingly unstable and could have implications for global sea levels, a new report warns. “The more this marine ice sheet instability occurs, the wider the range of possible future sea level rise becomes,” says Alex Robel, a co-author of the report published by @thenasciences The message is clear: #CCAMLR must create a network of marine protected areas in the Southern Ocean. #Antarctica2020 #Antarctica #SouthernOcean #TurningTheTide @sealegacy @lonelywhale @pewenvironment

Photo by @shawnheinrichs // Shortfin makos are the fastest shark and one of the fastest fish on the planet. 🦈⚡️However, these beautiful animals can’t out-swim the impacts of unsustainable fishing practices. The IUCN shark specialist group recently increased their threat status to Endangered. The heightened extinction risk for one of the ocean’s most iconic sharks is a stark warning that urgently requires a suite of conservation measures to prevent the species being lost. In August, world governments will consider listing a record number of seriously at-risk shark and ray species, including makos, on Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species ( @CITES ). @bluespherefoundation and @sealegacy are supporting an unprecedented push with key countries to gain the two-thirds majority needed for their inclusion. Stay tuned for how you can continue #TurningTheTide for sharks. 🌊🦈 @thewcs @vulcaninc @sharkconservationfund @pewenvironment @thelifeofrileynz @sealegacy

Photo by @shawnheinrichs // Our team just returned home from an incredible shoot in the Galapagos Islands with @paulnicklen and @cristinamittermeier of @sealegacy In addition to learning so much from these two passionate conservationists and icons of wildlife imagery, storytelling and conservation, we were also treated to some of the most spectacular displays of magnificent marine life found anywhere on the planet. In particular, Darwin Island surpassed all expectations, serving up such a mind-blowing abundance and diversity that we were at a loss on where to point our cameras, because it was all so so incredible! But even amongst such abundance, it was also in the intimate moments of connection with even just one of these magnificent creatures that also really touched us. We are feeling so inspired, and so grateful for incredible work that is being done today in the Galapagos Islands to ensure that this natural heritage treasure is preserved long, long into the future. #turningthetide @conservationorg @wildaidgps @wildaid @darwinfound @parquegalapagos

Photograph and words by @shawnheinrichs // Society has conditioned us to approach life from a place of scarcity, fueling a deep sense of emptiness that many of us carry, and then convincing us that we can only fill it with “stuff.” And it is this emptiness that is driving so much of the wanton destruction that is happening on our planet today, where we rip the natural treasures from Mother Earth, and convert them in to throw-away consumer goods. But the sad truth is that the more we acquire these goods, the more empty we feel, and the more we strive to fill it even further with useless stuff. If left unchecked, this downward spiral has only one outcome - a desolate planet, devoid of wildlife, overflowing with rubbish, steeped in suffering and devoid of meaning. ☠️🤕🗑️⛈️ The real healing begins when we look within ourselves, and truly love and appreciate who we are and what we are - and realize that we are already whole. 💕 And it's from this place of abundance that we can then nurture our relationships, forge a stronger and healthier society, and truly reconnect with nature in the deepest sense. The time is now to make the transition from reckless CONSUMERS to relentless CONSERVERS. 🙏🌈🔥🦋🐢🦈🐬🐳 #ahimsaray #hydratelike #startwith1thing #turningthetide #lovenature #loveearth

🐋💙🐋 Good news! For the first time since 2002, no whales will be killed in Iceland this summer. Gunnar Bergmann Jonsson announced today that his whaling company will not hunt minke whales this season. This comes just weeks after Iceland’s lone fin whaling company indicated that it would not hunt fin whales. Let’s celebrate the fact that hundreds of whales will be spared from a cruel death this summer, and continue to fight for an end to all commercial whaling. 💪🏽 From RÚV (full article in my story ): “It has been confirmed that no whales of any type will be hunted, including minke whales. Minke whale hunters are going to concentrate on sea cucumbers this summer & the CEO of Hvalur hf., the only company that hunts great whales, exclusively for export to Japan, has said that market conditions in Japan are too difficult. Whaling has taken place in Icelandic waters every summer since 2003 when whaling for scientific purposes started again after a gap of ~14 years. Commercial whaling started again in 2006. Fisheries minister Kristján Þór Júlíusson made a decree in February allowing continued hunting of fin & minke whales until 2023. The hunting decrees are renewed on a 5-yearly basis. Hafrannsóknarstofnun (Marine Research Institute ) has set a recommended maximum yearly catch between 2018 and 2025 of 209 fin whales and 217 minke whales. Hvalur hf. CEO Kristján Loftsson announced this spring that his company would not catch great whales this summer because it has proven difficult to market the meat in Japan, where 100% of the catch is exported to. Gunnar Bergmann Jónsson, CEO of IP útgerð, which hunts minke whales for domestic consumption, says his company is going to concentrate on sea cucumbers until 1st September. “It does not suit us as things stand at the moment & so the decision was made to skip it [this year].” His company imports minke whale meat from Norway to meet demand in Iceland & he says the decision to start hunting will be reexamined next spring. Hafrannsóknarstofnun also confirmed there will be no whaling for scientific purposes.” #worthmorealive #stopthehunt

In wild Alaska, a massive mining project threatens the lifeblood of an entire ecosystem — but a line is being drawn in the sand: #NoPebbleMine Over a decade long fight, the mine has been thrown yet another lifeline with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA ) announcing their intended move to undo environmental restrictions that have thwarted the project thus far. Pebble Mine will sacrifice too much — economically, socially, culturally, and ecologically. Our voices matter in this vital land-use decision. We need your help to ensure that it is impossible for US Congress and the Army Corps of Engineers to ignore this alarm. There is one more way that you can help! 🐻 The United States Army Corps’ environmental review process for this mine has been rushed through at an unprecedented speed, resulting in significant deficiencies and gaps in information. A mine with this level of risk should not be rushed through the environmental review process, let alone be considered at all. If you’d like to take your action one step further and make yourself heard directly by the U.S Army Corps, you can submit your public comment - link in our bio. Photograph by John Weller // Emperor Penguin and Icebreaker: On Oct. 28, 2016, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources declared the world's first large-scale international marine protected area (MPA ) in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. It is the world's largest MPA, and it protects the last large intact marine ecosystem on Earth. The final deal was struck, and when it was announced the room erupted. People were standing, clapping, cheering, crying. Nations were literally hugging other nations. This was not just a massive win for Antarctica. It was not just a massive win for the conservation of our global oceans, though it was both. This was also a peace treaty. If we all work together, we believe it is a blueprint for the future of our oceans. #fbf #turningthetide #rosssea @sealegacy @lonelywhale

Photograph and words by our founder @shawnheinrichs // WHERE DO WE DRAW THE LINE? - In the early morning hours in a remote fishing port in Southeast Asia, we witnessed in dismay as the sharks piled up on the cold concrete slabs of the market floor, the value of their fins fueling the destruction of the last of their kind in these waters. Sadness quickly turned to heartbreak as a truck pulled up and dumped the lifeless body of this beautiful baby manta ray onto the dirt, it's blood seeping into the putrid soil. Peacefully swimming through the archipelago as it began its new journey, it's life was violently and abruptly ended by a harpoon driven into the back of its head, the last moments of its existence spent struggling in desperation at the end of a rope - a line that traced back to desperate fisherman exploited in their poverty, to opportunistic buyers filling orders without consideration of the consequences, to greedy traders who treat all beings as commodities, and to apathetic buyers seeking to fill an emptiness in their lives through the acquisition of expensive and exotic "remedies."‼️😥🦋 Manta rays are highly sentient, curious, gentle, and magnificent beings, yet they too have fallen victim to the insidious and barbaric wildlife trade that turns wild animals into consumer goods, wiping out species after species, as greedy traders grow rich by exploiting the ignorance of people living unintentional lives. 💔😥 Though much progress has been made to protect these vulnerable animals through international treaties, national laws and sanctuaries, alongside consumer demand reduction campaigns, the illegal trade continues in some regions and consumers remain unaware or apathetic about the plight of manta rays. It is unconscionable to not protect these beautiful and highly vulnerable beings, and we must be ever more diligent in our quest to extinguish the demand, shut down the illicit trade, and put a final end to the slaughter. 🙏🔥🌎 @sealegacy @lonelywhale @indonesianoceanpride #turningthetide #tbt #worthmorealive

BREAKING NEWS: The US House of Representatives has approved an amendment to a bill that would block a permit for the proposed Pebble Mine in Alaska. This is an important step toward protecting Bristol Bay, but we can't relax just yet. A bill cannot pass unless and until both bodies of US Congress agree that it should become law, and the Senate still has to write their own version of the bill. SeaLegacy will continue to pressure the administration with same message: Bristol Bay is no place for a toxic mine. If you agree with us, make sure US Congress knows that you're #TurningTheTide for the last wild salmon stronghold on Earth, and sign the petition via the link in our bio. 📷: @paulnicklen @sealegacy

Video by @paulnicklen // In the remote waters of Bristol Bay, Alaska, exists the greatest wild salmon stronghold in the world. But now, it is up against one of the largest proposed gold and copper mines on Earth: Pebble Mine. The construction of Pebble Mine would forever change the face and future of Bristol Bay - and of all of the people and animals that live there. The story of Bristol Bay is one of perseverance in the face of incredible odds; it's a story about a movement to keep one of America's last true wild places out of the hands of industry titans, because what happens to these waters, happens to all of us. Bristol Bay is just one critical decision away from possibly losing everything that makes it a national treasure. But with the project still under review, we still have a chance to encourage U.S. Congress to make the right decision. Photo by @shawnheinrichs // PLASTIC OCEAN - Is this the future you choose? Is it really ok to continue behaving as reckless, unintentional beings, consuming single-use plastics at an alarming rate and allowing incomprehensible volumes of plastic to flow into the oceans each year? Is it ok that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish? Is it ok that marine life across the oceans is now literally suffocating on plastic pollution? Is ok that micro-plastics can be found in the tissue of just about all species of fish? And let’s make it personal. Is it ok that these beautiful, gentle mantas that for generations have visited this cleaning station that was once flushed with clean blue seawater, now are choking on shocking tides of plastic rubbish that wash into their open mouths and lodge in their gills? If your answer is no, and I truly hope it is, then we can all, each and everyone of us, play a significant roll in turning things around. The purchasing choices you make everyday have a meaningfully impact and you have the power to make a difference. And together as a global community, billions of seemingly insignificant choices made everyday add up to some very big and highly impactful decisions. The #plasticpollution crisis isn’t often talked about as a #climate issue, but it should be. Every piece of plastic begins as a fossil fuel, and greenhouse gasses are emitted at each stage of plastic’s lifecycle. A new report published last week by CIEL reveals the shocking impact plastic is having not just on our #ocean , but also on our #climate Today, greenhouse gas emissions created by plastics are threatening our ability to keep temperature rise below 1.5°C and by 2050, these emissions could reach over 56 gigatons - nearly 13% of the total remaining carbon budget.⁣ We must take action NOW to stop the #climatecrisis Read the full report through our link in bio and tag a friend in the comments who should know the facts about #plastic ⁣ 📸 @aristorisi

Photo by @shawnheinrichs // “Turtle Roundup” - where many of the Southeast Asia endangered sea turtles take their last breath. 🐢☠️😢 On Hainan Island, a province of China in the South China Sea, is a floating city controlled by illegal wildlife traffickers and triads, that by all accounts is GROUND ZERO for illegal trafficking and trade in sea turtles. This floating city is made up of hundreds, if not thousands, of netted water pens, many of which are packed to the rim with hawksbill and green sea turtles. The pens are so densely packed that the turtles have to fight their way to the surface to get a brief moment to breath. The turtles in these pens come from hatchlings and eggs poached from across Southeast Asia, including among others Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, Indonesia and the Philippines. The young turtles are then “raised” in these horrific pens and many succumb to diseases. The ones that survive to sub-adulthood become commodities in the illegal wildlife trade. Green turtles are typically sold for their meat and the hawksbills for their highly valuable shells, which are carved into combs, sunglass frames, hand fans, and certain luxury trinkets. When I looked upon this massive operation systematically eradicating the wild sea turtle populations, my heart sinking and soul darkened, the only words that could come to mind were ‘turtle apocalypse’. This unconscionably violation of nature must be stopped.... #worthmorealive #racingextinction #worldturtleday
