An unbelievable congregation of species at the last remaining water at Tinga Camp. A resident bull Elephant, a small family of Buffalo, Carmine Bee eaters nesting in the bank and the ever present Marabous and Baboons in the distance. During the rainy season especially, our Cessna puts in many hours continuing with aerial surveillance, resupplying outlying bases, evacuating sick rangers and a multitude of other tasks. Thankfully this day the runway was nice and dry.. #conservation #africanparksnetwork #workhorse

Who me? King? 🦁 Repost @matttoddphotos with @get_repost Wild. Part of the beauty of Zakouma National Park is it has retained an untouched, wild feel and there is nothing better than to be reminded of our place on this earth than when face to face, eye to eye with a top predator while out walking. - Thanks Matt! #lion #zakouma #chad #africanparksnetwork #lionrecoveryfund #simba #reallionking #king #tingacamp #campnomade #safari #africa #catsofinstagram #protectthepride #wild #nature #conservation

A repost today from wildlife photographer @lennarthessel Lennart visited Zakouma this year in mid March. Visit his blog lensman.com/blog to learn more about his stay. #zakouma #tingacamp #chad #safari #africanparksnetwork #conservation ・・・ It took us a full day on the road to be able to spend around 15 minutes with the single breeding herd of Elephants in the Park. Nowadays the say this herd consists of around 600 animals and they are all skittish when it comes to human sent and human voices. So, we felt fortunate to see 200+ animals from the huge breeding herd, the biggest in Africa they say, coming out to drink when the sun was setting. © Lensman – Lennart Hessel Photography www.lensman.se #lensmanphoto #wildplanet #wildlife #natgeowild #natgeo #africa #sudaniansavannah #sahel #wildlifephotography #wildography #elephants #megaherd #lensman #animalsofinstagram #animalphotos #animalphotography #naturephotography #wildlifephotography

Happy World Giraffe Day! 🦒🦒 Did you know that Zakouma National Park was founded to protect the endangered Kordofan Giraffe in 1963? With around 1200 indiviuals, Zakouma is now the stronghold for the species. To learn more about these iconic African animals, follow researcher @giraffe_girl_in_chad and @giraffe_conservation ! . #Repost @africanparksnetwork and a little bit of a summary for all the new followers helping us surpass 12.000 (!!! )! Welcome! 😍 ・・・ Zakouma’s transformation, from being a killing field for elephants and people, to now a safe haven for all who live here, would not have been possible without our biggest allies, the local communities. Along with providing a stabilising force in the region through effective law enforcement, African Parks has been providing education, teacher salaries, employment and tourism over the years. Since 2013, we have built and funded 24 schools, delivering education to 6,646 children, and in 2018 alone we provided $64K in teacher salaries. All of this has been in an area where prior to 2010, no options for education existed. We installed VHF radios in villages so, if need be, community members could contact our park control room at any time for any help at all! And because of the much needed manpower to help manage the park, local employment grew, making @zakouma_national_park the largest employer in the region. With law enforced and security reclaimed, tourism could then be realised. The tourist camps started to be heavily frequented, delivering needed funds back into the park to protect its wildlife and the surrounding communities. More than 25,000 tourists have visited Zakouma since 2010, 50% of whom are Chadian nationals, and together they have generated $1.7M in tourism revenue which goes back to the park and the communities who live here. And that’s not all. Within this safe haven, elephants have begun to rise. In early 2018, we counted 127 calves under the age of five years old. In 2011, we counted one. The elephant population has now surpassed 560 individuals and are on the rise for the first time in a decade. @europeancommission @europeaid ⠀ 📷 @stevewinterphoto #africanparks #zakouma #chad #europeanunion #forceforgood #bemoved

In spite of the park still being very dry, the preparations for the wet season have already started. Our amazing grader team has been working hard throughout the park for the entire dry season to ensure we have access roads to all parts of the Zakouma. This week though they are preparing two new bush airstrips for us which will ease logistics in a flooded Zakouma significantly! #zakouma #flying #aviation #CAT #conservation #zakouma_national_park #africanparksnetwork #chad

A unique sight in Zakouma, the elephant herd with their calves drinking from and bathing in the Salamat river. #Repost @africanparksnetwork • • • • • • Marvel at the abundance: In just a few short moments, this water pan in @zakouma_national_park comes alive as Zakouma’s elephant herd descends in the hundreds with young calves happily in tow to drink and bathe and find respite from the mid-day sun. This miraculous spectacle is a testament to Zakouma’s transformation and the recovery of a population once at risk of being lost entirely. Between 2002 and 2010, as many as 95% of the park’s elephants were killed for their ivory (around 4,000 ) and only 450 giants remained. However, in nine years of our managing of the park alongside the Chadian Government, much-needed security for people and wildlife has been restored to the landscape. Zakouma’s elephants began to settle down, and breed, and for the first time in decades their population began to rise. Just last year, our team counted over 560 elephants, including 127 calves under five years old. In 2011, we counted just one. Not only have elephants benefitted, but Zakouma has also become the largest employer in the region and tourism is flourishing, delivering revenue back to the park and surrounding communities. If you are on your way to Zakouma soon, be prepared to be witness to the most amazing wildlife observations! Water is quickly becoming a scarce commodity now that we are facing the peak of the dry season. The remaining pools have to be shared, which can be a tricky balance between predators and prey species.
